Free mattress removal in Portland

Here is how each route works in Portland, starting with the city program and ending with paid pickup.

Portland bulky waste pickup through your garbage company: mattresses

Hauler pickup, $18 trip + per item

Your hauler charges $18 plus $21 (queen or full) or $29 (king), box spring included. Metro transfer stations take mattresses free under Oregon's mattress stewardship program, which is the better deal if you can haul it.

Who qualifies: Residential customers of Portland's franchised garbage companies. There is no free city bulky program; every address has an assigned hauler that charges city-set rates.

How to schedule: Call your assigned garbage company (find it at portland.gov) at least a week ahead. The hauler must collect within 7 days of the request. Cost is an $18 pickup fee per trip plus a per-item charge set by the city: $29 for extra-large items, $21 for large, $6 for appliances and electronics, more for coolant appliances.

Limits: No item limit, but each item is charged. Use the city's bulky waste cost calculator before booking.

Set-out: At the curb by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day and no more than 24 hours before. Miss the window and you pay the trip fee twice. Early set-outs soak up rain and attract dumping.

Donation pickup in Portland (usable mattresses)

Free

Portland’s donation programs accept items in good usable condition: clean upholstered furniture without significant tears or stains, working appliances less than 10 years old, mattresses in good condition (subject to program-specific rules), kitchenware, lamps, and most household goods.

Items typically not accepted: damaged or stained furniture, mattresses with bedbug history or significant wear, appliances that don’t work, particle-board furniture in poor condition, cribs (federal safety regulations have changed), and exercise equipment that requires reassembly. Always call before scheduling if you’re unsure, pickups that find unacceptable items will leave them behind.

How Portland handles mattresses

Portland’s system is genuinely different from every other major U.S. city covered: there is no city-run bulky item pickup program. Each property is assigned to a specific garbage hauler by neighborhood, and bulky items are picked up by that hauler at City-set rates. Portland also runs the only major U.S. 4-stream curbside collection, trash, recycling, glass (separate yellow bin), and compost, with garbage collected biweekly while the others are weekly. This page walks through every legitimate option in order from free to paid.

The Portland rule for mattresses: Your hauler charges $18 plus $21 (queen or full) or $29 (king), box spring included. Metro transfer stations take mattresses free under Oregon's mattress stewardship program, which is the better deal if you can haul it.

Program basics: No item limit, but each item is charged. Use the city's bulky waste cost calculator before booking. At the curb by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day and no more than 24 hours before. Miss the window and you pay the trip fee twice. Early set-outs soak up rain and attract dumping.

What the city will not take: Nothing is free curbside. Hazardous waste, tires, and construction debris go to Metro transfer stations instead. Mattresses and electronics are free at Metro stations under Oregon programs.

How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: City of Portland BPS: Bulky waste collection rates, Metro: Garbage, recycling, and hazardous waste disposal (transfer stations). Programs change; confirm fees and limits before you go.

Why mattresses are different from ordinary bulk. Mattresses contain springs, foam, fabric, and wood, all recyclable individually but bonded together in a way that makes them hard to process. They’re also a notorious vector for bedbugs, which has led several cities to require plastic-wrapping before curbside pickup (NYC and Cleveland have explicit rules).

Prep checklist before pickup day in Portland

Three mistakes that get mattresses left at the curb:

  • Don’t leave a mattress at the curb without confirming pickup rules. Many cities require appointments, an unscheduled mattress at the curb can result in code enforcement notices and fines.
  • Don’t illegally dump a mattress. Fines under state environmental laws can reach $1,000 to $10,000. The free options above cover almost every situation.
  • Don’t skip the plastic-wrap rule in cities that require it. NYC and Cleveland (among others) require mattresses be plastic-wrapped before curbside pickup to prevent bedbug spread. Crews will leave unwrapped mattresses behind.

When free options don’t fit your timeline or volume:

Common questions about mattress removal in Portland

Does Portland pick up mattresses for free?

Not free curbside ($18 plus $21 to $29). Free at a Metro transfer station under Oregon’s mattress program.

Where can I donate a mattress in Portland?

Portland’s donation programs accept items in good usable condition: clean upholstered furniture without significant tears or stains, working appliances less than 10 years old, mattresses in good condition (subject to program-specific rules), kitchenware, lamps, and most household goods.

How much does paid mattress removal cost in Portland?

Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single mattress pickup in Portland starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who need same-day service, want full-service in-home pickup (no curbside drag-out), live in 5+ unit buildings, or have items their hauler won’t accept, LoadUp offers professional removal in Portland with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.

Can I just put a mattress in my regular trash?

No. Mattresses are too big for residential trash bins and are explicitly banned from regular trash collection in most U.S. cities. Connecticut, Rhode Island, California, and Oregon ban mattresses from landfills entirely under state law. Use one of the free or paid options above instead.

How much do paid mattress pickups cost?

Single mattress pickups typically range $80 to $200 depending on the service and your city. National services (LoadUp, 1-800-Got-Junk, College Hunks) cluster in the $80 to $130 range for one mattress. Local independent haulers can be cheaper ($50 to $100). Booking 2 mattresses together is often only marginally more expensive than booking 1, ask about bundled pricing.

What about box springs, are they treated the same?

Yes, box springs follow the same rules as mattresses in nearly every city, same pickup eligibility, same disposal channels, same bedbug-wrap requirements. State recycling programs (CT, RI, CA, OR) accept both. Most retailers haul both away together with new mattress delivery. King and queen splits typically count as 2 separate items, while single-piece box springs count as 1.

My mattress has bedbugs, what should I do?

Plastic-wrap the mattress fully before moving it (heavy-duty mattress disposal bags are sold at hardware stores for $5 to $15). Many cities require plastic-wrapping for ANY mattress disposal to prevent spreading bedbugs to other households along the route. Donation programs CANNOT accept mattresses with bedbug history. Use city bulk pickup (with proper plastic-wrapping) or paid hauler. Tell the hauler in advance, some services charge extra or refuse, while others handle bedbug mattresses routinely.

Is this Portland page maintained?

Yes. Freemoval maintains this page as a public resource alongside the full Portland guide. We update it when programs change rules, fees, or contact methods. Last updated October 2026. If you find outdated information, let us know.
