Buffalo weekly bulk trash: scrap metal

Free

Metal items count as bulk pieces, or go to a scrap yard any time.

Who qualifies: City of Buffalo households with city tote service.

How to schedule: No appointment. Put up to 3 pieces of bulk trash beside your tote every week, year-round, on your regular collection day. Each spring and fall the city also runs a Large Bulk Trash week per Council District for piles up to 4 cubic yards, set out on the designated Sunday. Extra pickups any time are available through 311's Pick and Pay for a fee.

Limits: 3 items a week, each one cohesive piece no more than 12 by 3 by 3 feet (a dresser with drawers removed counts as several pieces). Seasonal piles up to 4 cubic yards; larger piles draw a $350 fine. Owner-occupied 1 to 2 family homes can also dump up to a ton a year free at the East Side Transfer Station.

Set-out: Beside your tote from 7 p.m. the evening before your collection day. Seasonal bulk only on your district's designated Sunday.

How Buffalo handles scrap metal

Buffalo runs an unusual two-tier bulk system unique to the Northeast: EVERY weekly collection day, residents get 2 pieces of bulk trash collected with no appointment required, furniture, appliances, mattresses, box springs, carpet sections (4-foot lengths), bundled brush, and similar oversized items count. Plus, twice a year (Spring and Fall), each of Buffalo’s 9 Council Districts gets a designated week for Large Bulk Trash collection, up to 4 cubic yards (12 ft long, 3 ft wide, 3 ft high) at the curb in addition to the weekly 2-piece allowance. $350 fine if Large Bulk goes out before your district’s designated week. Buffalo’s holiday schedule is the simplest of any major U.S. city: only Christmas Day and New Year’s Day cause delays. The 2026 Spring schedule starts March 29 in Fillmore District and runs through June 21 in North/University District. TVs, computers, tires, construction debris, and hazardous waste are NEVER allowed curbside, dedicated programs for each. This page walks through every legitimate option in order from free to paid.

The Buffalo rule for scrap metal: Metal items count as bulk pieces, or go to a scrap yard any time.

Program basics: 3 items a week, each one cohesive piece no more than 12 by 3 by 3 feet (a dresser with drawers removed counts as several pieces). Seasonal piles up to 4 cubic yards; larger piles draw a $350 fine. Owner-occupied 1 to 2 family homes can also dump up to a ton a year free at the East Side Transfer Station. Beside your tote from 7 p.m. the evening before your collection day. Seasonal bulk only on your district's designated Sunday.

What the city will not take: TVs, computers, tires, construction debris, paint, and hazardous materials are never allowed at the curb; e-waste goes to 1120 Seneca St, tires to special collection days.

How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: City of Buffalo: Bulk Trash Information (three items weekly), City of Buffalo DPW: Streets and Sanitation (e-waste, appliances, tires), City of Buffalo: Fall Bulk Trash Collection schedule and rules. Programs change; confirm fees and limits before you go.

Hazardous and regulated components in Buffalo. Buffalo residents have free hazardous waste disposal at twice-yearly HHW events, call 311 for current dates. The events accept paints, oil, gas, pesticides, and propane tanks. Universal waste (fluorescent bulbs, rechargeable batteries, mercury-containing devices) is accepted year-round at 1120 Seneca Street. Tires have their own dedicated 4-times-a-year collection at the Broadway Garage (197 Broadway), with bonus tire collection at HHW events. HHW is NEVER accepted curbside in regular trash, weekly bulk, or Large Bulk Season. Several retailers also offer ongoing free recycling: Home Depot for batteries and CFL bulbs, AutoZone for motor oil and car batteries, Best Buy for electronics, most pharmacies for unused medications. The relatively limited HHW infrastructure (only 2 events per year) is one of the few weak spots in Buffalo’s otherwise generous waste system, plan ahead for HHW disposal needs.

Why scrap metal are different from ordinary bulk. Most household scrap is mixed. An appliance is a steel shell around a copper motor and aluminum fins; a bike is a steel or aluminum frame with rubber and plastic. Yards accept mixed items at the steel rate, so sorting pays only if you have enough non-ferrous metal to make it worth the time. A magnet and ten minutes usually tells you.

Prep checklist before pickup day in Buffalo

  • Run a magnet over everything and separate non-ferrous (no stick) pieces into a bucket.
  • Remove propane tanks, lead-acid batteries, and lithium packs; take each to its proper drop-off.
  • Drain fluids from mowers, water heaters, and engines.
  • Leave refrigerant lines intact on fridges, ACs, and dehumidifiers.
  • Stage at the curb edge and post as free scrap, or load sorted bins and bring ID to the yard.

Three mistakes that get scrap metal left at the curb:

  • Don't pay to dispose of metal. A scrapper will take it free and a yard will pay.
  • Don't put propane tanks, lead-acid batteries, or lithium batteries in a scrap pile. Tanks go to an exchange or HHW; batteries to an auto parts store or battery drop-off.
  • Don't cut refrigerant lines on fridges, ACs, or dehumidifiers to sell the compressor. Yards refuse cut units and venting is a federal violation.

Paid options barely exist for metal, except when the metal is attached to things that are not metal.

Mixed loads to a transfer station

$20 to $60

If metal is mixed into a larger cleanout, transfer stations charge by weight for the whole load. Pull the metal out first and give it to a scrapper; it reduces the fee and keeps metal out of the landfill.

Most transfer stations have a free metal pile. Ask before you tip.

Common questions about scrap metal removal in Buffalo

Does Buffalo pick up scrap metal for free?

Yes, as bulk pieces, or a scrap yard.

How much does paid scrap metal removal cost in Buffalo?

Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single scrap metal pickup in Buffalo starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who need same-day or in-home pickup, exceed the 2-piece weekly or 4 cu yd Large Bulk limits, can’t wait for the next Large Bulk season, have items the city won’t accept (TVs, computers, tires, construction debris), or want full-service hauling, LoadUp offers professional removal in Buffalo with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.

Will someone pick up scrap metal for free?

Yes. Independent scrappers in every metro collect appliances, grills, frames, and other metal from the curb free, usually the same day you post it, because they sell it by weight. Many city bulk programs also collect metal.

How much does a scrap yard pay?

Steel pays a few cents per pound; a washer or water heater might bring a few dollars. Aluminum pays several times more, and copper and brass pay the most, often a few dollars per pound. Prices change weekly with commodity markets.

How do I tell what kind of metal I have?

Use a magnet. If it sticks, the metal is ferrous (steel or iron) and pays the base rate. If it does not, it is aluminum, copper, brass, or stainless and worth sorting out. Copper is reddish, brass is yellow, aluminum is light and silver, stainless is heavy and silver.

Can I scrap a refrigerator or air conditioner?

Yes, but the refrigerant must be recovered first by a certified technician or by the yard if it has recovery equipment. Do not cut the lines. Many yards accept sealed units and recover the gas themselves; call first.

Yes. Freemoval maintains this page as a public resource alongside the full Buffalo guide. We update it when programs change rules, fees, or contact methods. Last updated October 2026. If you find outdated information, let us know.
