A public resource guide
Porcelain, cast iron, fiberglass, and acrylic all have different exits. Most cities treat fixtures as construction debris, which changes who will take them for free.

Bathroom fixtures are the renovation leftovers most likely to sit in a driveway for months. A porcelain toilet weighs 60 to 120 pounds, a cast iron tub 250 to 400, and a fiberglass tub-shower surround is light but enormous. The complication is classification: most cities file fixtures under construction and demolition debris, which many bulk pickup programs exclude. Where fixtures are accepted, they often need to be broken down, and where they are not, scrap yards, ReStores, and C&D recyclers fill the gap. Here is the full map.

Porcelain is the sticking point. A whole toilet or pedestal sink is heavy, awkward, and shatters into sharp pieces, so many bulk crews refuse them intact. Some cities accept porcelain if it is broken into pieces and bagged or boxed; others route it to the transfer station as inert C&D material. Clean porcelain is actually recyclable as aggregate, and a growing number of regions accept it at concrete recyclers.
Tubs split by material. Cast iron tubs are prized by scrap yards and will be picked up free from a curb by independent scrappers within a day. Steel tubs are lighter and also scrap. Fiberglass and acrylic tubs have no scrap value and usually have to be cut into sections to fit any pickup limit.
Vanities, medicine cabinets, and faucets are the easy part. Wood vanities are furniture to most programs, and ReStores accept intact vanities, pedestal sinks, and newer toilets for resale.
Free routes depend on material. Match the fixture to the option.
Habitat ReStore and salvage donation
FreeReStores accept intact toilets (typically 1.6 gallons per flush or less, no cracks, with tank lid), pedestal and drop-in sinks, vanities with doors, and clawfoot or vintage tubs. Architectural salvage shops want cast iron tubs, pedestal sinks, and period fixtures and sometimes pick them up.
Clean the fixture thoroughly. Donation staff refuse anything with mineral staining or residue.
Toilets must include the tank lid and seat at most ReStores, and some require the 1.28 gpf WaterSense label.
Scrap metal pickup for cast iron and steel tubs
Free, often paid to youA cast iron tub is 250 to 400 pounds of iron that scrap yards pay for by weight. Post it as free scrap and an independent scrapper will typically pick it up from the curb or even the bathroom within a day. Steel tubs, cast iron sinks, and brass faucets go the same way.
Breaking a cast iron tub with a sledgehammer (covered with a blanket, wearing eye protection) turns a 350 pound lift into carryable chunks and is how most DIY removals handle second-floor tubs.
Scrappers want the whole tub if access is reasonable; breaking it is optional.
City bulk pickup where fixtures are accepted
Free in some citiesA number of cities accept toilets, sinks, and tubs with bulk pickup, usually as homeowner-generated items rather than contractor debris. Others take broken porcelain in bags or boxes with regular trash. Many exclude fixtures entirely as C&D. The directory below shows which group your city falls into.
Fiberglass tubs and surrounds usually need to be cut to the program's length limit, often 4 to 6 feet.
Contractor-generated debris is excluded almost everywhere even when homeowner fixtures are accepted.
Toilet rebate and recycling programs
Free, sometimes with a rebateWater utilities in drought-prone regions run toilet replacement rebates ($50 to $150) and some operate porcelain recycling drop-offs where old toilets are crushed into road base. These programs are concentrated in the Southwest, California, Texas, and Florida.
Search your water utility plus 'toilet rebate.' Most require a WaterSense replacement and proof of purchase.
When the city classifies fixtures as C&D and no scrap or donation route fits, paid options are the only legal path.
Self-haul to a transfer station or C&D recycler
$10 to $40Transfer stations accept fixtures as C&D by weight or by load. Clean porcelain is accepted at some concrete and aggregate recyclers for less. Break porcelain into bagged pieces to make it easy to handle.
Line the vehicle. Porcelain shards will cut carpet and tires.
LoadUp paid pickup
$80+For households not eligible for free programs, or who need a toilet or bathtub gone this week, LoadUp connects you with independent loaders in cities across all 50 states. Upfront pricing, same-week scheduling, in-home pickup from any floor, and licensed disposal or recycling handled for you.
What’s included: Loading, hauling, and disposal. No prep needed beyond pointing out what goes.
Pricing: Starts around $80 for a single item; full-truck pickups range from $300 to $600 depending on volume.
If you can pay for a pickup, your booking helps fund free pickups for someone else. Every paid LoadUp customer can opt in to round up at checkout, and 100% of round-ups go directly to Freemoval’s subsidized jobs.

City rules on bathroom fixtures split three ways: accepted with bulk pickup as homeowner items, accepted only as broken porcelain in bags, or excluded as construction debris. Tap a city for its rule and the nearest transfer station. Each city link opens a dedicated free toilet or bathtub removal guide for that city, built from the same researched city data.

Can I put an old toilet out with bulk trash?
It depends on the city. Some accept toilets and sinks with bulk pickup, some accept only broken porcelain in bags with regular trash, and many classify fixtures as construction debris and exclude them. Check the directory below for your city.
Is porcelain recyclable?
Yes, as inert aggregate. Crushed toilets and sinks become road base and fill. Some transfer stations and concrete recyclers accept clean porcelain for less than general C&D rates, and some water utilities run toilet recycling drop-offs.
How do I get a cast iron tub out of a second-floor bathroom?
Either hire scrappers or movers who handle the weight, or break it. Cover the tub with a heavy blanket, wear eye protection, gloves, and long sleeves, and strike the side near the drain with a sledgehammer; cast iron cracks into pieces that two people can carry. Clean up the enamel chips, which are sharp.
Will a ReStore take a used toilet?
Most will if it is a 1.6 gpf or lower model, uncracked, clean, and complete with tank lid and seat. Some require the WaterSense 1.28 gpf label. Older 3.5 gpf toilets are generally refused.
What about the vanity and the medicine cabinet?
Vanities are furniture to most bulk programs and are accepted. ReStores take intact vanities with doors and drawers. Medicine cabinets with mirrors are accepted as bulk in most cities; wrap the mirror.
Can I donate or sell a fiberglass tub?
Rarely. Fiberglass and acrylic tubs have no resale market unless new in box. Cut them into sections for bulk pickup where fixtures are accepted, or take them to a transfer station as C&D.
What does LoadUp charge to remove bathroom fixtures?
A single toilet or sink prices at the single-item minimum, around $80 to $100 in most metros. Cast iron tubs price higher because of weight and often need two loaders. Independent loaders on the LoadUp marketplace handle stairs and the C&D disposal fee.
