A public resource guide
Metal frames are scrap. Wood frames and headboards are donations or bulk. Box springs follow mattress rules in the four states with mattress laws and bulk rules everywhere else.
Last updated: October 2026 · Maintained by Freemoval as a public resource
Bed frames are three different disposal problems wearing one name. A basic metal frame is 25 to 40 pounds of steel angle that any scrap yard or scrapper takes free. A wood or upholstered bed with headboard, footboard, and side rails is furniture that donation programs accept if intact and bulk programs accept broken down. A box spring is a wood frame with steel springs and fabric that most cities treat exactly like a mattress, including the four states that ban mattresses from landfills or run recycling programs. This guide handles all three.

The frame problem is mostly logistical: beds come apart into pieces, and bulk programs differ on whether a disassembled bed is one item or five. Some count the bundle as one if it is tied together; some count each piece. Metal frames can be folded flat and tied.
Box springs are the real issue. They are bulky, hold their shape, and in cities with bedbug concerns must be wrapped in plastic before set-out. In California, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, box springs are covered by state mattress recycling programs (Bye Bye Mattress), and in Massachusetts they are banned from disposal and must be recycled. Elsewhere they go out with bulk pickup under mattress rules.
Upholstered headboards and platform beds with built-in storage are the hardest pieces to donate because of size and condition standards, and they often need to be broken down for pickup.
Nearly every frame and box spring has a free route. Metal goes to scrap, wood goes to donation or bulk, and box springs follow your city's mattress rule.
Scrap pickup for metal frames
FreeSteel bed frames, metal headboards, and the springs inside a box spring are all scrap. Fold a metal frame flat, tie it, and either take it to a yard or post it as free scrap; scrappers collect them from the curb quickly.
Adjustable bed bases contain motors and electronics; scrap yards accept them, and some e-waste programs do too.
Bunk beds and loft frames in metal are also scrap once disassembled.
Donation for intact wood and upholstered beds
FreeHabitat ReStores and furniture banks accept complete bed frames (headboard, footboard, rails, slats) in good condition, and furniture banks especially need twin and full frames. Box springs are accepted by some mattress-accepting programs only if clean and undamaged.
Bag the hardware and tape it to the headboard.
Box springs: most donation programs refuse them unless paired with a like-new mattress.
City bulk pickup
Free in most citiesDisassembled bed frames tied in a bundle are accepted by nearly every bulk program. Box springs are accepted under each city's mattress rule, which may require plastic wrapping or a separate appointment. In the four mattress-law states, box springs go to the state recycling program or a drop-off.
Tie the pieces together so the bundle counts as one item.
Wrap box springs in plastic where required; mattress bags cost a few dollars at hardware stores.
Retailer takeback with a new bed
Free or small feeMost mattress retailers take the old mattress and box spring on delivery, and many will take a metal frame. Furniture stores delivering a new bed frame often haul away the old one for a small fee.
Ask when ordering. Haul-away is rarely added on delivery day.
Paid options cover box springs in states where free drop-offs are inconvenient and large platform or storage beds that need breaking down.
Self-haul to a transfer station or mattress recycler
Free to $25 per pieceBox springs are accepted at transfer stations for a per-piece fee in most areas and free at state program drop-offs in CA, CT, and RI. Disassembled frames fit in a car.
Tie box springs to a roof rack only if you must; they catch wind.
LoadUp paid pickup
$80+For households not eligible for free programs, or who need a bed frame or box spring gone this week, LoadUp connects you with independent loaders in cities across all 50 states. Upfront pricing, same-week scheduling, in-home pickup from any floor, and licensed disposal or recycling handled for you.
What’s included: Loading, hauling, and disposal. No prep needed beyond pointing out what goes.
Pricing: Starts around $80 for a single item; full-truck pickups range from $300 to $600 depending on volume.
If you can pay for a pickup, your booking helps fund free pickups for someone else. Every paid LoadUp customer can opt in to round up at checkout, and 100% of round-ups go directly to Freemoval’s subsidized jobs.
Get a bed frame or box spring pickup price from LoadUp → Round-up option appears at checkout. Optional, opt-in only.
Frames are accepted almost everywhere when bundled; box springs follow each city's mattress rule, including wrapping requirements and state recycling programs. Tap a city for both rules. Each city link opens a dedicated free bed frame or box spring removal guide for that city, built from the same researched city data.

Can I put a bed frame out for bulk pickup?
Yes in nearly every city. Disassemble it and tie the pieces together so the bundle counts as one item. Metal frames can also be folded and taken to a scrap yard free.
Is a box spring treated like a mattress?
In most cities, yes. Box springs follow the same bulk pickup rules as mattresses, including plastic wrapping where required and separate appointments in some cities. In Massachusetts, California, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, box springs are covered by state mattress laws.
Which states have mattress and box spring laws?
California, Connecticut, and Rhode Island run Bye Bye Mattress recycling programs funded by a fee on new purchases, with free drop-off sites. Massachusetts banned mattresses and box springs from disposal in November 2022 and requires recycling. Oregon has enacted a program as well.
Can I donate a box spring?
Rarely on its own. Most programs only accept a box spring paired with a clean, like-new mattress. Metal frames in good condition and complete wood frames are much easier to donate.
What do I do with an adjustable bed base?
They contain motors, a control box, and wiring. Scrap yards accept them, many e-waste programs take them, and bulk programs usually accept them as a large item. Remove the remote and power cord if you want to keep them.
How do I break down a box spring?
If your program requires pieces under a size limit, cut the fabric with a utility knife, pull it off, and the wood frame comes apart with a pry bar. The steel grid goes to scrap and the wood is bulk or firewood if untreated.
What does LoadUp charge to remove a bed frame or box spring?
A frame or box spring prices at the single-item minimum, around $80 to $100 in most metros. A full bed set (mattress, box spring, frame) prices slightly higher. Independent loaders on the LoadUp marketplace handle wrapping and recycling drop-offs where state law requires them.
