A public resource guide

How to get rid of construction debris.

Drywall, lumber, tile, concrete, roofing, cabinets. Almost no city bulk program takes it, which leaves transfer stations, dumpsters, C&D recyclers, and haulers. Here is what each costs.

Roll-off dumpster filled with furniture and renovation debris

Construction and demolition debris is the category nearly every city bulk program excludes: drywall, lumber, tile, concrete, brick, roofing shingles, insulation, plaster, and cabinetry from a renovation. The reason is weight and liability; a bathroom remodel produces 1,000 to 3,000 pounds of material and a roof tear-off 5,000 to 15,000. Some cities make an exception for small quantities of homeowner-generated debris, bagged and within weight limits, and the directory below shows which ones. Everywhere else the options are a transfer station, a dumpster, a C&D recycler, or a hauler. Intact cabinets, doors, and fixtures are the exception: ReStores want them.

The challenge with construction debris

The homeowner versus contractor distinction matters. Cities that accept any C&D at the curb accept it only from residents doing their own work, in small amounts, usually bagged or bundled under 50 pounds. Contractor-generated debris is excluded everywhere and must be hauled by the contractor; make sure debris removal is in your contract.

Material determines cost at the transfer station. Clean concrete, brick, and asphalt are often accepted cheaply or free at aggregate recyclers because they are crushed into road base. Clean lumber goes to wood grinders. Drywall is recyclable in some regions. Mixed debris pays the full C&D rate, which is why sorting a load saves money.

Hazards hide in older debris. Houses built before 1980 may have asbestos in floor tile, mastic, popcorn ceilings, pipe insulation, and siding; disturbing it requires testing and licensed abatement. Pre-1978 paint may contain lead. Both make the debris hazardous waste rather than C&D.

Free options

Free options for construction debris are limited but real, especially for materials in good condition.

ReStore and salvage donation of cabinets, doors, and fixtures

Free, often with pickup

Habitat ReStores accept kitchen cabinets (complete sets especially), interior and exterior doors, windows, lighting, plumbing fixtures, hardwood flooring, and unused building materials, and most offer pickup for full kitchens. Architectural salvage shops take period millwork, mantels, and hardware. This can remove a third of a kitchen remodel's debris at no cost.

Remove cabinets carefully with doors and drawers intact; tear-out destroys their value.

Leftover new materials (tile, flooring, lumber, paint) are also accepted.

Small homeowner quantities with city pickup where allowed

Free in some cities

A minority of cities accept small amounts of homeowner-generated debris: bagged drywall and plaster under a weight limit, bundled lumber with nails removed, a few bags of tile. Limits are strict and contractor debris is never included. Check the city rule.

Bag heavy materials in small bags (under 40 to 50 pounds) so crews can lift them.

Concrete and roofing are excluded almost everywhere even where drywall is allowed.

Free listings for usable material

Free

Pavers, bricks, clean fill dirt, lumber, leftover tile, and even broken concrete (for fill and retaining walls) are claimed on free listings. 'Free clean fill, you load' is one of the most reliable listings in home improvement.

Stack it at the curb or driveway edge so takers do not need an appointment.

Clean concrete, brick, and asphalt at aggregate recyclers

Free to low fee

Concrete recyclers accept clean, rebar-free concrete, brick, and asphalt at little or no charge because they resell the crushed product. Sorting these out of a mixed load is the biggest cost saver in a demolition.

Rebar and mesh usually add a fee or cause rejection; cut it out where you can.

Most renovation debris will go through one of these paid channels. Match the volume to the option.

Self-haul to a transfer station

$30 to $100 per pickup load

Transfer stations charge by weight (commonly $60 to $120 per ton with a minimum) or by load. A pickup truck of mixed debris typically runs $30 to $100. Sort concrete and clean wood out for cheaper rates where offered.

Tarp the load; most jurisdictions fine uncovered debris.

Call about asbestos rules before hauling anything from a pre-1980 house.

Bag dumpsters and roll-offs

$130 to $600

Bag-style dumpsters (such as the Bagster) hold about 3 cubic yards and cost roughly $30 for the bag plus $100 to $200 for pickup, suited to a bathroom or small kitchen. Roll-off dumpsters run $300 to $600 for a 10 to 20 yard container for a week, with weight limits that heavy materials like tile and concrete hit quickly.

Heavy-material dumpsters for concrete and dirt are priced separately and smaller.

Driveway placement may need plywood under the container to protect the surface.

Junk removal pickup

$150 to $600+

For debris already piled and ready, hauler pickup prices by volume and avoids a week of a dumpster in the driveway. Useful for a one-day cleanup after the work is done.

Mention heavy materials when booking; concrete and tile change the quote.

LoadUp paid pickup

$80+

For households not eligible for free programs, or who need construction debris gone this week, LoadUp connects you with independent loaders in cities across all 50 states. Upfront pricing, same-week scheduling, in-home pickup from any floor, and licensed disposal or recycling handled for you.

What’s included: Loading, hauling, and disposal. No prep needed beyond pointing out what goes.

Pricing: Starts around $80 for a single item; full-truck pickups range from $300 to $600 depending on volume.

If you can pay for a pickup, your booking helps fund free pickups for someone else. Every paid LoadUp customer can opt in to round up at checkout, and 100% of round-ups go directly to Freemoval’s subsidized jobs.

Common mistakes to avoid

Common questions

Can I put construction debris out with bulk trash?

In most cities, no. Bulk programs exclude C&D. Some cities accept small quantities of homeowner-generated debris (bagged drywall, bundled lumber) under strict weight limits. Contractor debris is excluded everywhere. Check your city in the directory below.

How much does it cost to dump construction debris?

Transfer stations charge roughly $60 to $120 per ton with a minimum fee, so a pickup load runs $30 to $100. Bag dumpsters total $130 to $230. Roll-off dumpsters cost $300 to $600 for a week. Hauler pickup prices by volume from about $150.

What can I recycle from a renovation?

Clean concrete, brick, and asphalt (aggregate recyclers), clean lumber (wood grinders), scrap metal (free at yards), cardboard, and in some regions clean drywall and asphalt shingles. Intact cabinets, doors, windows, and fixtures are donations rather than recycling.

Will Habitat ReStore pick up kitchen cabinets?

Most ReStores pick up complete cabinet sets in good condition, along with doors, windows, appliances, and fixtures. Schedule before demolition and remove cabinets carefully with doors and drawers intact.

How do I know if there is asbestos?

Houses built before 1980 may contain asbestos in 9 by 9 floor tile and its mastic, popcorn and textured ceilings, pipe and duct insulation, cement siding, and some drywall joint compound. Have suspect materials tested by a lab before disturbing them; abatement must be done by a licensed contractor.

Is a bag dumpster or a roll-off better?

A bag dumpster suits a bathroom or small project under about 3 cubic yards and 3,000 pounds. A roll-off suits a kitchen, roof, or whole-room demolition. Heavy materials like tile and concrete hit weight limits fast in either, so ask about heavy-debris pricing.

What does LoadUp charge to remove construction debris?

Debris prices by volume and weight, typically from about $150 for a small pile upward. Independent loaders on the LoadUp marketplace take it to a transfer station or C&D recycler; mention heavy materials like concrete or tile when booking so the quote is accurate.
