Built-in dishwashers are light for an appliance but awkward to uninstall. Once it is out from under the counter, nearly every free appliance route applies.

A standard 24-inch dishwasher weighs 60 to 90 pounds, far less than a washer or refrigerator, and contains no refrigerant. The hard part is not disposal but removal: it is hardwired or plugged in under the sink, connected to a hot water supply and a drain, and screwed to the underside of the counter. Once it is free, dishwashers are accepted by retailer haul-away programs, scrap recyclers, most city bulk programs, and donation centers if working.

Dishwashers are usually replaced as part of a kitchen project, which means the old one often ends up sitting in a garage because nobody planned its exit. Because they are lighter than other appliances, two people can carry one to the curb, but the uninstall involves three connections (power, water, drain) and any of them done wrong can flood a cabinet.
The electrical connection deserves respect. Many dishwashers are hardwired to a junction box behind the kick plate rather than plugged in. Turn off the breaker and confirm with a tester before touching wires. The water supply is typically a 3/8 inch compression fitting on the hot water stop under the sink.
Portable and countertop dishwashers skip all of this; they unplug and roll out, and they go in the same disposal channels as the built-in kind.
Free is realistic for almost every dishwasher. The order below runs from least effort to most.
Retailer haul-away with installation
Free or $20 to $30Most retailers that install a new dishwasher will remove and haul the old one as part of the service. Because installation already requires disconnecting the old unit, this is the cleanest path and worth the modest fee where one applies.
Confirm haul-away is on the order before delivery day. Installers can rarely add it on-site.
Clear the cabinet under the sink so the installer can reach the shutoff and drain connection quickly.
Scrap metal recyclers
FreeA dishwasher is a steel tub or a steel cabinet around a plastic or stainless tub, plus a copper-wound pump motor. Scrap yards accept them free, and independent scrappers will often pick one up from the curb within a day of a free listing.
Stainless interiors have slightly more scrap value than plastic tubs.
Remove the racks only if you want them; recyclers take the whole unit.
City bulk or appliance pickup
Free in most citiesBecause a dishwasher has no refrigerant and weighs under 100 pounds, most city bulk programs accept it as a standard large item. Cities with a separate appliance category usually include dishwashers at no extra fee.
Check the local rule below. A few cities ask for the door to be removed or taped shut.
Set out on the scheduled day only. An appliance left at the curb early is a common code violation.
Donation if working
FreeHabitat ReStores take working dishwashers that are under roughly 10 years old, clean, and complete with racks and the kick plate. Many offer pickup for appliances, and a dishwasher is light enough that drop-off is also easy.
Run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner before donating. Odor is the most common reason a unit gets refused.
Keep the mounting brackets and screws taped inside the door.
Paid options are rarely needed for a dishwasher alone, but they make sense when it is part of a larger kitchen cleanout or when nobody is available to carry it.
Self-haul to a transfer station

Dishwashers are among the most widely accepted appliances in city bulk programs because they are light and contain nothing regulated.
