A public resource guide
Cardboard is the most recycled material in the country, but a move produces more of it than a cart can hold. Here is how to give boxes away, recycle in volume, and handle the packing material.
Last updated: October 2026 · Maintained by Freemoval as a public resource
A typical household move uses 60 to 120 boxes, and they all arrive in the new home at once. Cardboard is accepted by every curbside recycling program in the country, but a week's worth of flattened boxes is three or four carts' worth, and most programs limit overflow. The best outcome is giving intact boxes to the next mover, which free listings and box exchange sites make easy. After that, flattening and bundling for curbside, hauling to a recycling drop-off, and sorting packing material (paper recycles, bubble wrap and foam mostly do not) round out the plan.

Volume is the only problem. Cardboard is clean, dry, and valuable to recyclers, but it is bulky until flattened and a stack of 100 boxes is a small room. Most curbside programs accept flattened cardboard bundled next to the cart, within size limits (often 2 by 3 feet, tied), and reject boxes that are not broken down.
Wet or greasy cardboard is not recyclable. Boxes that sat in a wet garage or were used for food go in the trash. Tape and labels are fine; recyclers handle them.
Packing material is mixed. Packing paper and newsprint recycle with cardboard. Bubble wrap and air pillows are plastic film that goes to store drop-off bins, not the curbside cart. Foam peanuts are accepted by shipping stores for reuse. Molded foam blocks are trash in most places.
Every box can leave free. In order of least effort:
Give boxes to the next mover
FreeIntact boxes with the tape slit are claimed within a day on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Nextdoor, and Buy Nothing groups, and box exchange listings exist on moving sites. Post the count and sizes; takers often bring a truck and take packing paper too.
Wardrobe boxes and dish packs are the most requested; list them first.
Stack flat but unbroken (slit the bottom tape, fold flat) so they reassemble.
Curbside recycling, flattened and bundled
FreeFlatten every box, stack to the program's bundle size (commonly 2 by 3 feet or 3 by 3 feet), and tie with twine. Most programs accept several bundles next to the cart per week; some require all cardboard inside the cart. Spread a large move over two or three collection weeks.
Remove packing material and large plastic liners; tape can stay.
Keep it dry. Put bundles out the morning of collection, not the night before rain.
Recycling drop-off for volume
FreeMunicipal recycling centers, transfer stations, and big-box stores with cardboard balers accept unlimited flattened cardboard free. A hatchback holds a whole move's worth flattened and takes one trip.
Flatten first; drop-off bins reject whole boxes.
Retailer compactors are often behind the store; ask customer service before using one.
Packing material reuse points
FreeShipping stores accept clean foam peanuts and often bubble wrap for reuse. Plastic film (bubble wrap, air pillows, stretch wrap) goes to grocery and retail store film drop-off bins. Packing paper recycles with cardboard.
Molded foam blocks are trash in most places; a few regions have foam densifier drop-offs.
Paid options are rarely needed for cardboard alone, but a move-out cleanout that includes boxes, packing material, and leftover items is a common hauler job.
Junk removal pickup for a whole move-out
$100 to $400When boxes are mixed with furniture, packing material, and leftover items, a hauler clears it in one trip and recycles the cardboard.
Flatten what you can first to reduce the volume and the price.
LoadUp paid pickup
$80+For households not eligible for free programs, or who need moving boxes and cardboard gone this week, LoadUp connects you with independent loaders in cities across all 50 states. Upfront pricing, same-week scheduling, in-home pickup from any floor, and licensed disposal or recycling handled for you.
What’s included: Loading, hauling, and disposal. No prep needed beyond pointing out what goes.
Pricing: Starts around $80 for a single item; full-truck pickups range from $300 to $600 depending on volume.
If you can pay for a pickup, your booking helps fund free pickups for someone else. Every paid LoadUp customer can opt in to round up at checkout, and 100% of round-ups go directly to Freemoval’s subsidized jobs.

Every city recycles flattened cardboard; the variables are bundle size, whether bundles may sit outside the cart, and where the free drop-off is. Tap a city for its rule. Each city link opens a dedicated free moving box removal guide for that city, built from the same researched city data.

How do I recycle a lot of moving boxes?
Flatten every box, bundle to your program's size limit (often 2 by 3 feet), and tie with twine. Put out a few bundles each collection week, or take the whole flattened stack to a recycling drop-off or a retailer's cardboard baler in one trip. Check your city's bundle rules in the directory below.
Can I leave the tape and labels on?
Yes. Recycling mills screen out tape and labels. Remove large plastic liners, foam, and packing material.
Where can I give away moving boxes?
Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Nextdoor, Buy Nothing groups, and box exchange listings on moving sites. Post the count and sizes, slit the tape and fold flat without crushing, and takers usually collect within a day.
Is bubble wrap recyclable?
Not curbside. Bubble wrap and air pillows are plastic film accepted at grocery and retail store film drop-off bins, and shipping stores often take clean bubble wrap for reuse.
What do I do with foam peanuts and foam blocks?
Shipping stores accept clean foam peanuts for reuse. Molded foam blocks are trash in most places; a few regions have foam drop-off programs with densifiers.
Is cardboard actually recycled?
Yes. Cardboard has one of the highest recycling rates of any material, over 90 percent for corrugated boxes, because it is valuable to mills and easy to collect clean.
What does LoadUp charge to remove boxes and packing material?
Boxes alone rarely justify a pickup, but as part of a move-out cleanout with furniture and leftovers, loads price by volume from about $100. Independent loaders on the LoadUp marketplace recycle the cardboard.
