A public resource guide

How to get rid of a washer or dryer.

Laundry machines are heavy, mostly metal, and accepted by more free programs than people expect. Scrap recyclers, retailer haul-away, utility programs, and most city bulk pickups all take them.

Last updated: October 2026 · Maintained by Freemoval as a public resource

Household items and appliances left at the curb for bulk collection

A washing machine weighs 150 to 230 pounds and a dryer 100 to 150, and both are 60 to 80 percent steel by weight. That metal content is the key to free disposal: scrap yards, many city programs, and appliance recyclers all want them. The complication is that a washer still holds water in the pump and hoses, a dryer may be gas-connected, and both are awkward to move down stairs. This guide covers every legitimate route, from free to paid.

The challenge with washers and dryers

Washers and dryers sit in an unusual middle ground. They are not hazardous like a refrigerator (no refrigerant to recover under EPA Section 608), so most city bulk programs accept them without a special fee. But they are heavy enough that many programs set weight or two-person-lift limits, and a front-loader with a concrete counterweight can exceed 230 pounds.

Gas dryers add a safety step: the gas line must be capped by someone who knows how. Electric dryers run on 240V circuits, and the cord should be unplugged and removed before moving. Washers should be drained by tipping them forward over a pan or running a final drain cycle and disconnecting the supply hoses.

The good news is that the scrap value of the steel drum, frame, and motor means private recyclers and some nonprofits will take non-working units for free, which is not true of most bulky items.

Free options

Most households can get rid of a washer or dryer for free. Start with the option that matches the machine's condition.

Retailer haul-away with a new delivery

Free or $20 to $35

When you buy a replacement, the delivery team can take the old machine. Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, and most regional appliance dealers offer this, sometimes free with delivery and sometimes as a flat fee under $35. It is the lowest-effort route because the installers already have the dolly, the straps, and the truck.

Ask at checkout, not at the door. Haul-away usually has to be added to the order in advance. Delivery crews often cannot add it on the spot.

Disconnect first. Most retailers require the old unit to be disconnected from water, gas, and power before the crew arrives. Some will do it for an added fee.

Stacked units and pedestals: Confirm the crew will take the pedestal or stacking kit. Some policies count them as separate items.

Scrap metal recyclers and free appliance pickup

Free, sometimes paid to you

A washer or dryer carries 80 to 150 pounds of steel plus a copper-wound motor. Local scrap yards accept them at no charge and many pay by weight, typically a few dollars per unit. Independent scrappers who advertise free appliance pickup on Craigslist, Nextdoor, or Facebook Marketplace will often collect same day.

Post it as 'free scrap washer, curb pickup.' Non-working machines move within hours in most metros because the scrap value covers the trip.

Remove the hoses and cord if you want to keep them, and tape the door or lid shut so it does not swing open in transit.

Dryers: the drum, cabinet, and motor are all recyclable. Gas valves are brass and are also accepted.

Utility recycling programs

Free, often with a rebate

Some electric utilities run appliance recycling programs that pick up working or non-working machines and sometimes pay a $25 to $50 rebate. These are more common for refrigerators and freezers, but a number of utilities include clothes washers, especially older top-loaders that use 30 or more gallons per cycle.

Search your utility's name plus 'appliance recycling.' Programs change yearly and are sometimes funded only through a budget cycle.

Eligibility usually requires the unit to be working and plugged in so the crew can verify it, since the goal is retiring inefficient machines.

Donation pickup for working machines

Free

Habitat for Humanity ReStores, The Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, and furniture banks accept working washers and dryers, and most offer pickup for large appliances. Age limits are common: ReStores typically want units under 10 to 15 years old with no rust or leaks.

Clean the drum and lint trap and run an empty hot cycle before pickup. Programs refuse machines with mildew smell or standing water.

Include the hoses and cord when donating. Programs cannot test or resell a machine without them.

When the machine is in a basement with no walkout, the retailer will not take it, or you need it gone this week, paid options fill the gap.

Self-haul to a transfer station or scrap yard

Free to $25

If you own or can borrow a truck and an appliance dolly, most county transfer stations and all scrap yards accept washers and dryers. Transfer stations may charge a small appliance fee; scrap yards do not.

Two people and a strapped dolly are the minimum for stairs. A front-loader's counterweight makes it top-heavy.

Call ahead about hours and whether the facility wants the unit upright.

LoadUp paid pickup

$80+

For households not eligible for free programs, or who need a washer or dryer gone this week, LoadUp connects you with independent loaders in cities across all 50 states. Upfront pricing, same-week scheduling, in-home pickup from any floor, and licensed disposal or recycling handled for you.

What’s included: Loading, hauling, and disposal. No prep needed beyond pointing out what goes.

Pricing: Starts around $80 for a single item; full-truck pickups range from $300 to $600 depending on volume.

If you can pay for a pickup, your booking helps fund free pickups for someone else. Every paid LoadUp customer can opt in to round up at checkout, and 100% of round-ups go directly to Freemoval’s subsidized jobs.

Find washer or dryer disposal rules in your city

City programs vary more for appliances than for furniture. Some collect washers and dryers with regular bulk pickup, some require a separate appliance appointment, and a few exclude them entirely and point residents to scrap recyclers. The summaries below show the headline rule per city; tap a city to read the full local guide for laundry machines. Each city link opens a dedicated free washer or dryer removal guide for that city, built from the same researched city data.

Common mistakes to avoid

Common questions

Can I put a washer or dryer out with my regular trash?

Almost never in the regular cart, but most cities with a bulk or large-item program will take laundry machines at the curb on a scheduled day. Check your city's rules in the directory below; some require an appliance-specific appointment.

Is there anything hazardous inside a washer or dryer?

No refrigerant and nothing regulated under EPA Section 608. The only cautions are a possible gas connection on dryers, the 240V electrical cord, and residual water in a washer. Some older washers have a small capacitor on the motor, which scrap yards handle routinely.

How much does a washer or dryer weigh?

Top-load washers run 150 to 180 pounds, front-loaders 180 to 230 pounds because of the concrete counterweight, and dryers 100 to 150 pounds. Stacked units should be separated before moving.

Will a scrap yard pay me for an old washer?

Usually a few dollars. Scrap steel prices fluctuate, and a washer yields roughly 100 to 150 pounds of mixed steel plus a copper-wound motor. Many people find the free pickup more valuable than the payout and simply list the machine as free scrap.

Can I donate a washer that works but is 15 years old?

Many ReStores and thrift programs cap acceptance at 10 to 15 years. Furniture banks and smaller charities are often more flexible if the machine runs quietly and does not leak. Call first with the model year.

What does LoadUp charge for washer or dryer pickup?

Pricing starts around $80 to $100 for a single appliance in most metros, with in-home pickup from a basement or upstairs laundry room included in the upfront quote. The LoadUp marketplace connects you with independent loaders who handle the stairs and the disposal.

Do I need to disconnect the machine before pickup?

For retailer haul-away and most donation pickups, yes. For LoadUp and scrap pickups, loaders typically handle disconnection of water and electric, but gas lines should be shut and capped before anyone arrives.
