A public resource guide
Branches, brush, leaves, stumps, sod, and dirt each have a different rule. Most cities collect bagged or bundled yard waste free; stumps, dirt, and rocks are where it gets harder.
Last updated: October 2026 · Maintained by Freemoval as a public resource
Yard waste is the household waste stream with the most free options and the most rules. More than 20 states ban leaves, grass, and brush from landfills, so nearly every city runs a curbside yard waste program: bagged leaves and clippings in paper bags or a green cart, branches cut to a length limit and bundled, with seasonal schedules and weekly limits. The exceptions are the heavy and the problematic: stumps and root balls, sod and dirt, rocks, treated lumber, and invasive or diseased plant material. Those go to transfer stations, green waste recyclers, or free listings. Many municipalities also give the resulting mulch and compost back free.

Bundling rules are where most yard waste gets skipped. Branches typically must be under 4 feet long and 4 to 6 inches in diameter, tied in bundles under 40 to 50 pounds, and limited to a number of bundles per week. Leaves go in paper bags or carts, not plastic, in most programs because the material is composted. Plastic bags of leaves are the most common curbside rejection.
Stumps, root balls, sod, and dirt are not yard waste to most programs. They are too heavy, carry rock and soil that damages grinding equipment, and are classified as inert or C&D. Sod and clean fill are easy to give away; stumps usually need grinding on site or a trip to a transfer station.
Volume spikes after storms and fall cleanups overwhelm weekly limits. Most cities run storm debris collections and fall leaf programs with relaxed limits, and green waste drop-off sites take unlimited loads from residents free or for a small fee.
Yard waste is free to dispose of almost everywhere if you follow the bundling rules.
Curbside yard waste collection
Free or included in serviceWeekly or biweekly collection of leaves and clippings in paper bags or a green cart and branches cut and bundled to the program's limits. Many cities run the program seasonally (spring through fall) and add fall leaf vacuuming and Christmas tree pickup. Some charge per sticker or bag; most include it.
Paper bags, not plastic, in nearly all programs because the material is composted.
Branch limits are commonly 4 feet long, 4 to 6 inches thick, bundled under 50 pounds, with a weekly bundle cap.
Green waste drop-off sites and free mulch
Free to small feeMunicipal and county green waste sites accept unlimited brush, leaves, and clippings from residents, often free with proof of residency. Many give back finished mulch and compost free; bring a shovel and containers.
Separate dirt and rocks before you go; sites refuse loads contaminated with soil.
Stumps are accepted at some sites for a fee and refused at others; call.
Free listings for sod, fill dirt, firewood, and wood chips
Free'Free clean fill, you load,' 'free firewood, you cut,' and 'free sod' are among the fastest-moving listings on local boards. Arborists will also drop wood chips free through chip-drop programs if you want mulch.
Firewood from fruit, oak, and maple is claimed within a day; pine moves more slowly.
Do not move firewood far in areas with emerald ash borer or other quarantines.
Home composting and mulching in place
FreeLeaves mulched with a mower and left on the lawn, grass clippings left where they fall, and a simple compost pile for the rest eliminate most yard waste. Many cities sell subsidized compost bins.
Diseased plant material and invasive weeds should not go in home compost; bag them for the trash or the city program as it directs.
Paid options cover stumps, large tree removals, and heavy loads of sod and soil.
Stump grinding
$100 to $400 per stumpGrinding a stump in place to below grade is cheaper and easier than removing it. The grindings can be left as mulch or bagged as yard waste where the program allows wood chips.
Mark utilities first. Call 811 before grinding near service lines.
Self-haul to a transfer station or green waste site
Free to $40Sod, dirt, rocks, and stumps go to transfer stations as inert material by weight. Brush and leaves go to green waste sites free or cheaply.
Tarp loose loads. Leaves and clippings blow out and most jurisdictions fine it.
LoadUp paid pickup
$80+For households not eligible for free programs, or who need yard waste gone this week, LoadUp connects you with independent loaders in cities across all 50 states. Upfront pricing, same-week scheduling, in-home pickup from any floor, and licensed disposal or recycling handled for you.
What’s included: Loading, hauling, and disposal. No prep needed beyond pointing out what goes.
Pricing: Starts around $80 for a single item; full-truck pickups range from $300 to $600 depending on volume.
If you can pay for a pickup, your booking helps fund free pickups for someone else. Every paid LoadUp customer can opt in to round up at checkout, and 100% of round-ups go directly to Freemoval’s subsidized jobs.

Nearly every city collects bagged and bundled yard waste free with specific limits on bag type, branch size, and bundle counts; stumps, sod, and dirt are excluded. How do I put yard waste out for pickup?
Leaves and clippings in paper lawn bags or the green cart, not plastic. Branches cut to the length limit (usually 4 feet), under the diameter limit (usually 4 to 6 inches), tied in bundles under 40 to 50 pounds. Check your city's weekly bundle limit and season in the directory below.
Why can’t I use plastic bags?
Because yard waste is composted or ground into mulch, and plastic contaminates the product. Most programs require paper bags or carts; a few accept plastic bags that crews empty and leave behind.
Which states ban yard waste from landfills?
More than 20 states ban some or all yard waste from landfills, including Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas, and Delaware among others. That is why curbside programs are so common.
What do I do with a tree stump?
Grind it in place ($100 to $400), dig it out and take it to a transfer station as inert material, or list it free for someone who wants firewood or a planter. Most curbside programs exclude stumps and root balls.
Can I put sod and dirt out with yard waste?
No. Soil and sod are excluded from yard waste programs because they damage grinding equipment. Give them away as free fill or sod, or take them to a transfer station as inert material.
Where can I get free mulch?
Many municipal green waste sites give finished mulch and compost back to residents free. Arborist chip-drop programs deliver wood chips free. Bring a shovel and containers to drop-off sites.
What does LoadUp charge to remove yard waste?
Yard waste prices by volume, typically from the single-item minimum of about $80 to $100 for a small pile of bagged or bundled material. Independent loaders on the LoadUp marketplace take it to green waste sites where available.
