Cape Coral, Florida runs one of the more convenient curbside collection setups in the Southeast: garbage, recycling, yard waste, and bulk waste are all picked up on the same day, once per week, through contractor Waste Pro. No separate appointment is needed for routine bulk items. The system has a few important wrinkles: refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners are not part of standard curbside bulk because they require refrigerant handling, and approximately 20% of residents got new pickup days in October 2025 when Waste Pro adjusted routes. The city also runs a free bulk drop-off site at the North Cape Government Complex, plus quarterly drop-off events at City Hall for HHW. This guide covers every option for City of Cape Coral residents.

Free options at a glance

Cape Coral residents have several free disposal pathways. Each has eligibility rules and accepted item lists, not everyone qualifies for every option. Below is each one with what you need to know; deeper details follow in the sections after.

All-in-one curbside collection

Cape Coral’s curbside service collects garbage, recycling, yard waste, and bulk waste all on the same day, once per week, through Waste Pro. The convenience of having everything happen on one day is a meaningful improvement over cities with split schedules.

Find your collection day: Visit CapeCoral.gov/TrashPickup. Verify your day even if you’ve been a resident for years — approximately 20% of residents received new pickup days when Waste Pro adjusted routes in October 2025.

Set-out time: Items at curb by 6:00 AM on your collection day. Place bins at the edge of the road with wheels and handles facing the house. Bring bins back from the road when it’s not your scheduled trash day.

Bulk items accepted curbside:

· Furniture (sofas, chairs, tables, dressers, mattresses)

· Water heaters, washers, dryers, dishwashers (no refrigerant)

· Screen or wood doors, shower doors, toilets, drywall pieces or paneling no larger than 2′ × 2′

· Packing boxes and containers (must be broken down)

Yard waste preparation: Branches and limbs cut to no longer than 6 feet and tied in bundles max 50 lbs and 4 inches in diameter. Palm fronds do not need to be cut, bundled, or tied. Grass clippings, leaves, weeds, and fallen fruit should be bagged or containerized under 50 lbs.

Holiday schedule: No collection on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. When a holiday falls on a weekday, service is delayed one day for the remainder of the week.

Refrigerators, freezers, A/C units

Standard curbside bulk does not include appliances containing refrigerant. This includes refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and water coolers. Federal regulations require certified refrigerant recovery before disposal.

Your options for refrigerant-containing appliances:

· Retailer haul-away: When buying a new appliance, most retailers (Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, manufacturer direct) will haul away the old one for free or a small fee. They handle the refrigerant recovery. This is the simplest path.

· Lee County HHW Facility: 6441 Topaz Court, Fort Myers. Call (239) 533-8000 for current hours. Accepts appliances with refrigerant.

· Licensed appliance removal service: Local services with EPA Section 608 certification can recover refrigerant and haul. Paid LoadUp can connect you with certified loaders.

Move-out cleanouts: Move-outs are not part of the standard bulk pickup process and must be scheduled separately. A fee may apply. Contact the city for arrangement.

NOT accepted in standard curbside bulk: Construction and demolition debris (concrete blocks, pavers, masonry, tile, roofing). Trees, tree stumps, tree limbs larger than 4 inches in diameter or longer than 6 feet. Stone, dirt, land clearing material, root balls, logs.

Free bulk drop-off and quarterly events

Beyond curbside, Cape Coral runs a free year-round drop-off site plus periodic special events.

North Cape Government Complex Bulk Drop-off:
1200 Kismet Parkway (access from NW 14th Avenue)
Tuesday–Saturday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM
Free for Cape Coral residents

Quarterly Bulk and HHW Events at City Hall: The city holds quarterly drop-off events accepting bulk items and household chemical waste at City Hall, 1015 Cultural Park Boulevard, from 7–11 AM. These events also accept HHW that’s not allowed at the routine North Cape drop-off. Check capecoral.gov for current event dates.

Pro tip: If you have HHW (paint, propane tanks, fuel, solvents), wait for a quarterly event rather than scheduling a Lee County HHW trip — quarterly events combine bulk and HHW so you can clear out everything in one visit.

HHW and Lee County resources

Household chemical waste (fuel, paint, solvents, propane tanks) is not accepted in curbside collection. Three options:

1. Lee County HHW Facility: 6441 Topaz Court, Fort Myers. Call (239) 533-8000 for current hours. Accepts paint, chemicals, batteries, electronics, and other HHW free for Lee County residents.

2. Quarterly Cape Coral City Hall events: Also accept household chemical waste. See above.

3. Florida PaintCare: Florida is a PaintCare state. Leftover paint can be dropped off free at participating retailers across the state. Find locations at paintcare.org.

Auto parts stores (AutoZone, O’Reilly, Advance Auto Parts) accept used motor oil and lead-acid batteries free year-round.

Best Buy accepts most electronics free at customer service. Florida has e-waste guidance under state law.

October 2025 route changes

Approximately 20% of Cape Coral residential customers got new pickup days when Waste Pro adjusted routes effective Monday, October 20, 2025. Postcards were mailed to affected households, but if you missed yours or moved into the area recently, verify your current day at CapeCoral.gov/TrashPickup.

What changed:

· Some homes had their day shift to Monday for the first time

· Most residents kept the same day, but the time or order of collection may have changed

· Set-out time updated: items at curb by 6:00 AM (was 5:00 AM through September 30, 2025)

· Commercial customers were not affected

If you’ve been setting out at 5 AM the night before for years and your trash isn’t being collected, route changes are the likely culprit. Verify your address online before troubleshooting further.

Common questions

How does bulk trash pickup work in Cape Coral?

Cape Coral collects bulk waste, garbage, recycling, and yard waste all on the same day once per week through contractor Waste Pro. No separate appointment is needed for routine bulk items. Items must be at the curb by 6:00 AM. Find your day at CapeCoral.gov/TrashPickup. Important: verify your current day since approximately 20% of residents got new pickup days when Waste Pro adjusted routes in October 2025.

Why aren't refrigerators picked up curbside in Cape Coral?

Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and water coolers contain refrigerant that requires certified recovery before disposal under federal EPA regulations. Cape Coral's standard curbside bulk doesn't include this category. Your options: retailer haul-away with new appliance delivery (simplest), Lee County HHW Facility at 6441 Topaz Court Fort Myers (239-533-8000), or a licensed appliance removal service with EPA Section 608 certification.

What route changes happened in October 2025?

Effective Monday, October 20, 2025, Waste Pro adjusted residential trash routes in Cape Coral. About 20% of residents received new pickup days, including some homes that shifted to Monday for the first time. The set-out time also changed: items must now be at the curb by 6:00 AM (it was 5:00 AM through September 30, 2025). Verify your current day at CapeCoral.gov/TrashPickup. Commercial customers were not affected.

Where do I dispose of HHW in Cape Coral?

Lee County HHW Facility at 6441 Topaz Court, Fort Myers, (239) 533-8000. Also: quarterly City Hall drop-off events at 1015 Cultural Park Boulevard from 7-11 AM that accept both bulk and household chemical waste. Florida PaintCare retailers accept leftover paint statewide. Auto parts stores accept motor oil and batteries. HHW is not accepted in curbside collection or at the North Cape Government Complex drop-off.

How does the North Cape Government Complex drop-off work?

Cape Coral residents can drop off bulk waste at the North Cape Government Complex, 1200 Kismet Parkway (access from NW 14th Avenue), Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Free for residents. This site does not accept HHW — for paint and chemicals, use the quarterly City Hall events or Lee County HHW.

How do palm fronds get collected?

Palm fronds do not need to be cut down, bundled, or tied for curbside yard waste collection — just place them at the curb on your regular collection day. This is unique to Florida cities given the prevalence of palm trees. Other branches and limbs must be cut to no more than 6 feet long and tied in bundles max 50 lbs and 4 inches in diameter.
