City services in detail

Three weekly services on the same day. Charlotte provides three separate curbside services, all on the same weekday: garbage and yard waste are collected weekly. Recycling is collected every other week on your assigned Green week or Orange week.

Recycling is unusually strict. Charlotte only accepts 6 items curbside in the green recycling cart: cardboard (flattened, dry), aluminum and steel cans, cartons (milk, juice, soup), paper (newspaper, magazines, office paper), glass bottles and jars (rinsed), and plastic bottles and jugs with necks only (rinsed, caps off). That's it. The motto is “when in doubt, throw it out”, wishful recycling contaminates entire loads. For everything else, take to a Mecklenburg County full-service drop-off center.

Set-out rules. All carts and yard waste must be at the curb by 6 AM on collection day. Don't set out the night before unless after midnight. Cart handles must face your property; the silver bar must face the street.

Yard waste. Collected weekly April through December. Use paper yard bags or 32-gallon-or-less labeled containers. No plastic bags ever.

Charlotte vs. surrounding towns. The City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services serves Charlotte city addresses only. The towns of Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, Pineville, Mint Hill, and Matthews use separate providers (most use Waste Pro). Unincorporated Mecklenburg County areas must contract a private hauler. Call Charlotte 311 at 704-336-7600 to confirm your address receives City service. All Mecklenburg County residents can use the four County full-service drop-off centers regardless of where they live.

App and reminders. Use CLT+ at servicerequest.charlottenc.gov or text your collection day to 73224 for confirmation of which week you're on (Green or Orange) and your next recycling date.

Donation pickup, what gets accepted

Charlotte's donation programs accept items in good usable condition: clean upholstered furniture without significant tears or stains, working appliances less than 10 years old, mattresses in good condition (subject to program-specific rules), kitchenware, lamps, and most household goods.

Items typically not accepted: damaged or stained furniture, mattresses with bedbug history or significant wear, appliances that don't work, particle-board furniture in poor condition, cribs (federal safety regulations have changed), and exercise equipment that requires reassembly. Always call before scheduling if you're unsure, pickups that find unacceptable items will leave them behind.

Paid options

For households who can't wait for the bulk appointment, have items beyond the 75-pound limit, or live in unincorporated Mecklenburg County (no city service), paid options are available.

LoadUp paid pickup

$80+

For households who need same-week service, have items the city won't accept (over 75 lbs, certain construction debris), or live in unincorporated Mecklenburg County, LoadUp offers professional removal in Charlotte with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.

What's included: Loading, hauling, and licensed disposal. No prep needed beyond pointing out what goes.

Pricing: Starts around $80 for a single item; full-truck pickups range from $300 to $600 depending on volume.

Other paid services in Charlotte: 1-800-Got-Junk, College Hunks Hauling Junk, Junk King, comparison-shop for larger jobs.

Common questions

Is there really free junk removal in Charlotte?

Yes, Charlotte offers free curbside bulky item pickup by appointment through the CLT+ portal or 311. Items must weigh 75 pounds or less and meet size/preparation rules. Mecklenburg County also operates four free full-service drop-off centers where any county resident can drop off bulky items, electronics, hazardous waste, and yard waste with proof of residency. Donation pickup through Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore, and Goodwill is also free for usable items.

How do I schedule a bulk pickup in Charlotte?

Use CLT+ at servicerequest.charlottenc.gov, the CLT+ app, or call 311 (704-336-7600). A confirmed appointment is required, unscheduled items will not be collected. Place items at the curb by 6 AM on confirmed pickup day, within 2 feet of the curb and 3 feet from carts/mailboxes/poles. Allow up to 5 business days for collection after scheduling.

Why is Charlotte's recycling so strict?

Charlotte only accepts 6 items in curbside recycling: cardboard, cans, cartons, paper, glass bottles, and plastic bottles and jugs with necks. The strict list is intentional, Mecklenburg County’s materials recovery facility processes recyclables, and contaminated loads (caused by “wishful recycling” of items that can’t actually be processed) get sent to landfill. The motto is “when in doubt, throw it out.” For items that can be recycled but aren’t accepted curbside (rigid plastics, plastic bags, electronics, textiles), use Mecklenburg County’s four full-service drop-off centers.

How do I qualify for Freemoval in Charlotte?

Freemoval works through partner communities, typically affordable housing operators, public housing authorities, and select municipal partnerships. We’re actively expanding partnerships in Charlotte through 2026. If your property is part of the program, your property manager will provide a booking code. If you operate housing or work in a city department in Charlotte, contact us to discuss adding your community.

I live in Mecklenburg County but not in Charlotte. Does this apply?

The City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services only serves Charlotte city addresses. If you live in Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, Pineville, Mint Hill, or Matthews, contact your specific Town Hall, each uses a separate contracted provider (most use Waste Pro). If you live in unincorporated Mecklenburg County, you must contract a private hauler. However, all Mecklenburg County residents can use the four County full-service drop-off centers regardless of where they live.

How am I supposed to know if I'm on Green week or Orange week?

Use CLT+ at servicerequest.charlottenc.gov or text your collection day to 73224 to confirm which week you’re on and see your next recycling date. The CLT+ app also shows your specific schedule. Don’t guess, recycling carts left out on the wrong week will not be collected.

How do I report illegal dumping in Charlotte?

Call 311 (704-336-7600) or use the CLT+ portal. Reports can also be filed through the CLT+ app. Include location, description of dumped material, and a photo if possible.
