Every legitimate way to get rid of furniture, appliances, mattresses, and bulk waste in Dallas, including monthly 10 cubic yard brush and bulky curbside pickup, the once-yearly 20 cubic yard oversize collection, free landfill access for Dallas residents, and what to do when paid hauling isn't an option.

Last updated: May 2026 · Maintained by Freemoval as a public resource

Dallas has one of the most generous monthly bulk allowances in the country: 10 cubic yards every month, plus a 20 cubic yard oversize option once per year. Combined with free landfill access for Dallas residents in personal vehicles, the system is genuinely robust if you stay within the rules. This page walks through every option in order from free to paid, including the strict $60-per-5-cubic-yards penalty for exceeding limits without scheduling oversize pickup first.

Free options

Dallas residents have monthly 10 cubic yard brush and bulky curbside pickup, an annual 20 cubic yard oversize allowance, free landfill access for residents in personal vehicles, and donation pickup programs. The City of Dallas Sanitation Department serves single-family homes and duplexes; multi-family properties have private collection.

Monthly brush and bulky pickup (10 cubic yards)

Free with service

Dallas residential customers receive monthly brush and bulky trash curbside collection up to 10 cubic yards (about 3 typical pickup-truck loads). Service rotates by district, check your address-specific calendar at dallas.gov/sanitation. No appointment needed for the standard monthly pickup.

Eligibility: Dallas residential single-family homes and duplexes. Multi-family properties (3+ units) have private collection.

Volume limit: 10 cubic yards per collection week (about 3 typical pickup-truck loads). Going over without scheduling oversize pickup first triggers a $60 per 5 cubic yards fee, billed in 5 cubic yard increments.

Set-out window: Set out between Thursday and 7 AM Monday of your collection week. Earlier is a $200 fine. Place behind the curb line in front of your home.

Placement rules: Don't place within 5 feet of roll cart, mailbox, fence, water meter, telephone connection box, parked cars, fire hydrant, utility/light pole, or traffic sign. Don't place under low-hanging tree limbs or power lines, in an alley, or in front of vacant lots/businesses.

Brush rule: Leaves and lawn trimmings must be in paper bags. Plastic bags will not be collected during brush-only months. 30+ gallon compostable paper bags are available at home improvement stores.

Annual oversize pickup (up to 20 cubic yards)

Free, 1x/year

Once per calendar year, Dallas residents can request an oversize collection of up to 20 cubic yards (about 6 typical pickup-truck loads). The oversize collection takes the place of one of your 12 monthly collections, it doesn't add to it. Schedule the week before your normal collection week, or you'll get hit with the over-limit fee.

How to schedule: Submit a service request through Dallas 311 (online, app, or call 3-1-1) by Sunday 11:59 PM the day before your scheduled Monday collection week. Once submitted, it cannot be cancelled.

Composition rule: May not exceed 20 cubic yards total or contain more than 10 cubic yards of bulky trash (the rest must be brush).

Replaces, not adds: Oversize counts as your monthly collection for that month, you don't get a separate visit.

Bring a valid Texas driver's license showing a Dallas address or a current Dallas water utilities bill as proof of residency.

What you need: Texas driver's license with Dallas address OR current Dallas water utilities bill.

Vehicle limits: Passenger cars, station wagons, pickups, trailers under 15 feet. Larger commercial vehicles charged commercial rates.

City services in detail

Weekly trash collection. Dallas single-family homes and duplexes receive weekly garbage pickup in a city-issued roll cart. The roll cart is for household garbage only, no yard waste, liquids, hot ashes, leaves, brush, or bulky items. Place the roll cart with the handle toward your home and 3 feet of clearance on each side, 1 foot in back, to allow the automated collection arm to grasp it.

Weekly recycling (single-stream, blue cart). Effective 2005, Dallas eliminated separation requirements, single-stream recycling in the blue cart, collected weekly on the same day as garbage. Rinse all recyclables before placing in the cart.

Monthly bulk on a four-week rotation. Bulk pickup rotates through districts, collected during the week of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Monday of each month depending on your district. Use the address lookup at dallas.gov/sanitation to find your specific collection week.

Excessive set-out fees ($60/5 cubic yards). Dallas City Code Chapter 18 governs bulk pickup. Sets exceeding 10 cubic yards (or 20 cubic yards if oversize is scheduled) are still collected, but the customer is automatically billed at $60 per 5 cubic yards in 5 cubic yard increments. Major violations (generally over 120 cubic yards) get referred to Code Compliance for abatement.

Non-compliant set-out fees. Sets containing prohibited items (construction debris, hazardous waste, dead animals, tires, lumber, fence, stable matter, car parts) or items placed too close to remove may incur additional fees. Common rejections: items under low tree limbs or near electrical lines, items in alleys, items in front of vacant lots.

Multi-family exclusion. Service is for residences and duplexes only. Apartment buildings, condominiums, and commercial properties must arrange private hauling. This is a hard cutoff that excludes most large apartment complexes.

Sanitation Administrative Office. 3112 Canton Street, Suite 200, Dallas TX 75226. Phone: 214-670-3111 (or 311 for service requests). dallas.gov/sanitation.

Donation pickup, what gets accepted

Dallas's donation programs accept items in good usable condition: clean upholstered furniture without significant tears or stains, working appliances less than 10 years old, mattresses in good condition (subject to program-specific rules), kitchenware, lamps, and most household goods.

Items typically not accepted: damaged or stained furniture, mattresses with bedbug history or significant wear, appliances that don't work, particle-board furniture in poor condition, cribs (federal safety regulations have changed), and exercise equipment that requires reassembly. Always call before scheduling if you're unsure, pickups that find unacceptable items will leave them behind.

Paid options

For households who exceed the 10 cubic yard monthly allowance (and have used or don't want to use their once-annual 20 cubic yard oversize), need same-week service, or live in apartments excluded from city pickup, paid options are available. Note: the city automatically charges $60 per 5 cubic yards for over-limit set-outs, comparison-shop before assuming city is cheapest.

LoadUp paid pickup

$80+

For households who can't wait for monthly pickup, have items the city won't take (construction debris, certain appliances), or live in apartment buildings excluded from city pickup, LoadUp offers professional removal in Dallas with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.

What's included: Loading, hauling, and licensed disposal. No prep needed beyond pointing out what goes.

Common questions

Is there really free junk removal in Dallas?

Yes, Dallas has one of the more generous monthly bulk allowances in the country. Residential customers (single-family homes and duplexes) receive monthly curbside pickup of up to 10 cubic yards of brush and bulky trash on a rotating district schedule, plus a once-per-year oversize collection of up to 20 cubic yards. Dallas residents can also self-haul their own waste to City landfills and transfer stations free of charge with proof of residency. Donation pickup through Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore, and Goodwill is also free for usable items.

When is my Dallas bulk pickup week?

Dallas runs bulk pickup on a four-week rotation by district. Your collection happens during the week of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Monday of each month depending on your district. Look up your specific schedule at dallas.gov/sanitation or call 311. Set out items between Thursday and 7 AM Monday of your collection week, setting out earlier is a $200 fine.

What happens if I set out more than 10 cubic yards?

The city will still collect over-limit sets, but you'll be automatically billed at $60 per 5 cubic yards (in 5 cubic yard increments) on your water utility bill. Major violations over 120 cubic yards get referred to Code Compliance for abatement. To avoid the fee, either request your once-yearly 20 cubic yard oversize pickup the week before (via Dallas 311), self-haul the excess to a free landfill, or split the load across two monthly pickups.

How do I qualify for Freemoval in Dallas?

Freemoval works through partner communities, typically affordable housing operators, public housing authorities, and select municipal partnerships. We’re actively expanding partnerships in Dallas through 2026. If your property is part of the program, your property manager will provide a booking code. If you operate housing or work in a city department in Dallas, contact us to discuss adding your community.

I live in an apartment in Dallas. What are my options?

Dallas Sanitation only services single-family homes and duplexes. Multi-family complexes (3+ units), condominiums, and commercial properties must use private hauling. Your building’s contracted hauler may or may not include bulk service, ask your property manager. This gap is exactly why Freemoval exists: residents of multi-family low-income housing often have the fewest free options.

What's NOT accepted in Dallas bulk pickup?

Construction debris (including carpet), dead animals, hazardous waste, tires, lumber, fence, stable matter, and car parts are not accepted in regular bulk pickup. Some appliances (those containing Freon, refrigerators, freezers, ACs, dehumidifiers) are also excluded. For these items, use free landfill self-haul, the Home Chemical Collection Center for hazardous, or a paid hauler.

How do I report illegal dumping in Dallas?

Call 311 (or 214-670-3111) or use the Dallas 311 mobile app. Reports can also be filed at dallas.gov. Include location, description of dumped material, and a photo if possible.
