Jacksonville residents have weekly free bulk pickup, free Household Hazardous Waste disposal at the Commonwealth Avenue facility, and donation pickup programs. The City of Jacksonville Solid Waste Division serves single-family homes and buildings with 4 or fewer units within Duval County, with collection split between City crews, Meridian Waste, and Waste Pro USA depending on neighborhood.
Weekly bulk pickup (most items, no appointment)

Eligibility: City of Jacksonville Solid Waste Division customers (single-family homes and buildings with 4 or fewer units inside Duval County).
How to schedule: No scheduling needed for most items. Place at curb on regular garbage day. Appliances with Freon (refrigerators, freezers, ACs) and tires require a separate call to 630-CITY before set-out.
Set-out time: No earlier than 5 PM the day before, no later than 6 AM on collection day. Empty receptacles must be removed by 6 AM the day after collection.
DIY construction debris (automated areas only): Up to 2 cubic yards (about four wheelbarrows) of building materials accepted every other week on bulk collection day in Waste Pro service areas. Materials must not exceed 5 feet in length/width or 40 pounds. Contractor-generated debris not accepted.

How to schedule: Call 630-CITY (904-630-2489) or use the MyJax app/online service. Tires are scheduled separately at (904) 255-7501 for the Waste Tire Program.
Refrigerator preparation: Doors must be removed or permanently secured open before placement at the curb (federal child entrapment safety rule).
Commercial appliance disposal: Businesses can take appliances to the City's Appliance Center at 2675 Commonwealth Avenue (904-387-8847).

Weekly garbage and yard waste. Jacksonville collects garbage and yard waste weekly on the same day. Most bulk items are also collected weekly with no appointment.
Bi-weekly recycling (Week A or Week B). Recycling is collected every other week in the yellow-lid cart on the same day as garbage but on alternating weeks. Your address is assigned to either Week A or Week B, check at coj.net/swschedule.
Three contracted haulers. Service splits across City crews, Meridian Waste (Service Areas 1 and 2), and Waste Pro USA (Service Area 3). Rules and protocols are uniform, but contact for service issues differs by area. Identify your hauler at coj.net/swschedule or call 630-CITY (904-630-2489).
Set-out timing matters. Place curbside no earlier than 5 PM the day before scheduled collection, and no later than 6 AM on collection day. Empty receptacles must be removed from the curb by 6 AM the day after collection. Once collection trucks have passed your address, missed garbage becomes your responsibility until the next scheduled pickup.
Yard waste rules. Up to 5 cubic yards per household per week. Use trash cans under 40 gallons, paper lawn bags, or bundle with string/twine. Plastic bags are not accepted. Limit 50 lbs per bundle/bag. Branches under 5 feet, max 40 pounds per piece.
Downtown collection (Special Area). Downtown Jacksonville has separate rules under city code Section 380.203 and 208. All garbage must go in City-supplied cans. Collection is six times per week. No garbage on curb between 9 AM and 2 PM. Small commercial accounts pay $46.70/can/month.
Apartments. Buildings with more than 4 units are excluded from City service and must contract privately. This is a hard cutoff that excludes many large apartment complexes.
Jacksonville's donation programs accept items in good usable condition: clean upholstered furniture without significant tears or stains, working appliances less than 10 years old, mattresses in good condition (subject to program-specific rules), kitchenware, lamps, and most household goods.
Items typically not accepted: damaged or stained furniture, mattresses with bedbug history or significant wear, appliances that don't work, particle-board furniture in poor condition, cribs (federal safety regulations have changed), and exercise equipment that requires reassembly. Always call before scheduling if you're unsure, pickups that find unacceptable items will leave them behind.
For households who need same-day service, have items beyond curbside limits, or live in apartment buildings over 4 units, paid options are available.

To report illegal dumping in Jacksonville, call 630-CITY (904-630-2489) or use the MyJax app or website. Reports can also be filed at jacksonville.gov. Include the location (cross streets or address), description of dumped material, and a photo if possible. Jacksonville code enforcement actively investigates illegal dumping under Municipal Code Section 380.209, which makes it unlawful to place hazardous waste of any kind in residential collection waste streams. If you're considering dumping because you can't afford a haul, please use the free weekly bulk pickup, Jacksonville's schedule is genuinely generous (no appointment needed for most items).
Is there really free junk removal in Jacksonville?
Yes, Jacksonville has one of the more generous bulk pickup schedules in the country. Most bulk items (furniture, mattresses, electronics, scrap metal, rugs, small appliances) are collected weekly on the same day as regular garbage with no appointment needed. Refrigerators, freezers, ACs, and tires require a separate call to 630-CITY before set-out. Donation pickup through Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore, and Goodwill is also free for usable items.
When is my Jacksonville garbage day?
Your garbage collection day depends on your specific address. Use the Collection Day Finder at coj.net/swschedule, the MyJax app (iOS/Android), or call 630-CITY at (904) 630-2489. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners contain Freon and require special handling. Call 630-CITY at (904) 630-2489 before set-out to schedule pickup. By law, all doors on refrigerators and freezers must be removed or permanently secured open before placement at the curb (federal child entrapment safety rule). Once you have a confirmed collection date, place the appliance at the curb by 6 AM on that day. Many appliance retailers also offer free haul-away with delivery of a replacement.
How do I qualify for Freemoval in Jacksonville?
Freemoval works through partner communities, typically affordable housing operators, public housing authorities, and select municipal partnerships. We’re actively expanding partnerships in Jacksonville through 2026. If your property is part of the program, your property manager will provide a booking code. If you operate housing or work in a city department in Jacksonville, contact us to discuss adding your community.
My building has more than 4 units. What are my options?
Jacksonville’s Solid Waste Division only services single-family homes and buildings with 4 or fewer units. Larger apartment complexes and condominiums must contract privately for waste collection. Your building’s contracted hauler may or may not include bulk service, ask your property manager. This gap is exactly why Freemoval exists: residents of multi-family low-income housing often have the fewest free options.
What about construction debris from a home project?
DIY homeowners can put out up to 2 cubic yards of building materials every other week on bulk collection day, but only in Waste Pro automated service areas. Materials must not exceed 5 feet in length/width or 40 pounds per piece. Confirm your service area at coj.net/swschedule. Contractor-generated debris must be removed by the contractor. For larger volumes, take to Trail Ridge Landfill (fees apply) or rent a private dumpster.
