Weekly garbage and recycling. Orlando collects garbage, recycling, yard waste, and large items each once per week. Recycling and yard waste are typically collected on a different day from garbage.
Weekly Large Items pickup. Tampa and Atlanta both have biweekly or annual bulk pickup. Orlando's weekly Large Items pickup is unusual, it puts Orlando among the most generous cities for free bulk disposal frequency. Mattresses and upholstered furniture must be wrapped in plastic bags before set-out.
"Think 5" recycling rule. Orlando's recycling program is intentionally simplified to 5 categories: paper, cardboard, plastic, glass bottles, and metal cans. The motto is “when in doubt, throw it out”, over-recycling contaminates loads. Items must be empty, clean, and dry. Leave caps on plastic bottles. No plastic bags in the recycling cart.
Yard waste limits. Up to 3 cubic yards of yard waste per household per week (about three stoves' worth). Use your own cans or bags, cans must be 50 gallons or less and weigh under 60 pounds when full, with tight-fitting lids and side handles.
Christmas trees. Live Christmas trees can be set out on your yard waste collection day. Trees over 6 feet should be cut in half. Remove the stand and all decorations. Burning is prohibited in Orange County.
Cooking oil recycling. Orlando offers free cooking oil recycling containers, request from the Solid Waste Division at 407-246-2314.
Apartment exception. Apartment and condominium complexes have separate commercial service arrangements. The city's residential program only serves 1-4 unit residences within city limits.
Outside city limits. Unincorporated Orange County (much of the Orlando metro outside city limits, including most surrounding suburbs) is served by Orange County Utilities. Call 407-836-6601 or visit ocfl.net for county service. The county also offers weekly garbage, recycling, yard waste, and large items pickup.
Orlando's donation programs accept items in good usable condition: clean upholstered furniture without significant tears or stains, working appliances less than 10 years old, mattresses in good condition (subject to program-specific rules), kitchenware, lamps, and most household goods.
Items typically not accepted: damaged or stained furniture, mattresses with bedbug history or significant wear, appliances that don't work, particle-board furniture in poor condition, cribs (federal safety regulations have changed), and exercise equipment that requires reassembly. Always call before scheduling if you're unsure, pickups that find unacceptable items will leave them behind.
For households who need same-week service or have items beyond what city pickup accepts, paid options range from city special pickup to professional haulers.
LoadUp paid pickup
$80+For households who need same-week service or live in apartments/condos not covered by city service, LoadUp offers professional removal in Orlando with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.

Is there really free junk removal in Orlando?
Yes, and Orlando has one of the most generous schedules in the country. Large items (furniture, mattresses, appliances, TVs, up to 4 passenger tires) are collected free weekly on the same day as your garbage pickup. No scheduling required. Mattresses and upholstered furniture must be wrapped in plastic bags before set-out, and refrigerator doors must be removed. Donation pickup through Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore, and Goodwill is also free for usable items.
Do I really need to wrap mattresses in plastic in Orlando?
Yes, Orlando requires mattresses and upholstered furniture to be wrapped in plastic bags before being set out for Large Items pickup. This is a sanitation rule for worker safety and pest control. Mattress encasement bags are sold at most home goods and big box stores for $10-$15. Items not wrapped properly may be left at the curb.
When is my Orlando trash and large items day?
Look up your address-specific schedule at orlando.gov or call customer service at 407-246-2314. Orlando provides weekly pickup for garbage, recycling, yard waste, and large items, but the specific days vary by neighborhood. How do I qualify for Freemoval in Orlando?
Freemoval works through partner communities, typically affordable housing operators, public housing authorities, and select municipal partnerships. We’re actively expanding partnerships in Orlando through 2026. If your property is part of the program, your property manager will provide a booking code. I live in unincorporated Orange County, not Orlando. Does this apply?
No, the City of Orlando Solid Waste Division only serves residences within city limits. If you live in unincorporated Orange County (which covers much of the Orlando metro outside city limits, including most surrounding suburbs), your service is provided by Orange County Utilities. Call 407-836-6601 or visit ocfl.net. The county also offers weekly garbage, recycling, yard waste, and large items pickup, with similar rules.
I live in an apartment building. Why isn't my building covered?
Orlando’s residential collection program serves single-family homes and 1-4 unit residences. Apartment and condominium complexes have separate commercial service arrangements. Your building’s contracted hauler may or may not include bulk service, ask your property manager. This gap is exactly why Freemoval exists: residents of multi-family low-income housing often have the fewest free options.
How do I report illegal dumping in Orlando?
Call 407-246-2314 or email swcustomersvc@orlando.gov. Reports can also be filed at orlando.gov. Open burning of waste is prohibited in Orange County and can result in air quality fines.
