Salt Lake City operates one of the more resident-friendly bulk waste programs in the Mountain West. The free Call 2 Haul program gives every residential garbage customer two free scheduled bulk waste pickups per year, year-round on demand, with no zone rotation or appointment windows. The city also operates a mandatory 4-cart recycling and compost system with weekly collection. This guide covers every legitimate disposal option for Salt Lake City residents, including the program-specific details that distinguish SLC from surrounding cities (Salt Lake County, West Valley City, Murray, and Millcreek all have separate waste programs).

Call 2 Haul (free bulk pickup)

Call 2 Haul is Salt Lake City’s on-demand bulk waste program included free with residential garbage service. Every customer receives two free scheduled pickups per year: one for bulky items and one for green waste. Both are scheduled year-round at your convenience.

Schedule: Call (801) 535-6953 or use the online form at slc.gov/sustainability/call-2-haul

What’s accepted (bulky items pickup): Furniture, mattresses, large appliances, refrigerators (Freon removed), tires, electronics (e-waste), and other large items that won’t fit in the garbage cart.

What’s accepted (green waste pickup): Brush, bushes, and tree limbs (cut to 5 feet or less). Large branches OK. Note: City-owned park strip trees cannot be removed through Call 2 Haul, contact Urban Forestry at (801) 972-7818 for those.

Placement: Items must be placed on the parking strip or curb no more than 24 hours before your scheduled collection day. Loose, small items must be bagged or boxed.

Who qualifies: Single-family homes, duplexes, and triplexes within Salt Lake City limits who receive waste collection from the SLC Waste & Recycling Division. Surrounding cities (South Salt Lake, Murray, Holladay, Millcreek, West Valley City) have separate programs and are NOT served by Call 2 Haul.

Neighborhood group scheduling: Up to 20 households can now schedule a neighborhood cleanup event together for either bulky items or green waste. Contact Waste & Recycling to coordinate.

4-cart curbside system

All Salt Lake City residential garbage customers receive four color-coded carts, all collected on the same day each week:

· Green cart = Garbage (bagged household waste)

· Blue cart = Recycling (paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, loose not bagged, lids closed)

· Brown cart = Compost (yard waste, food scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells; NOT meat, dairy, or packaging)

· Grey cart (optional subscription) = Glass recycling

Recycling is mandatory by city ordinance. Placing recyclable items in the garbage cart is prohibited.

Winter compost suspension: The brown cart is not collected for approximately 6 weeks each winter (roughly January through early March). Check slc.gov/sustainability for current year dates. Plan ahead to empty yard waste before the suspension starts.

Important: Collection days changed citywide on February 3, 2025. If you haven’t verified your collection day since early 2025, check now at slc.gov/sustainability or call (801) 535-6999 (Mon–Fri 8 AM–5 PM).

HHW and hazardous waste

Household hazardous waste (paint, motor oil, batteries, chemicals, pesticides) is handled through Salt Lake County, not the City of Salt Lake City. Contact Salt Lake County Health Department at (385) 468-3862 for disposal locations and event schedules. Do not put HHW in Call 2 Haul, the garbage cart, or the recycling cart.

For e-waste (TVs, computers, electronics), the Call 2 Haul bulky pickup accepts electronics. Best Buy also accepts electronics free at most locations.

Donation programs

Salt Lake City has several donation organizations, including one unique to Utah:

· Deseret Industries — a nonprofit thrift and job-training program operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Multiple Salt Lake City and metro locations accept furniture, clothing, appliances, and household goods. Free drop-off and some areas offer pickup coordination. Very high volume, wide acceptance of usable items.

· Salvation Army — free pickup for usable furniture and large items. Schedule at satruck.org.

· Habitat for Humanity ReStore Salt Lake — accepts furniture, appliances, and building materials. Free pickup for qualifying donations.

· Goodwill of Utah — drop-off locations across the Salt Lake Valley.

· Road Home and Utah Community Action — supply furniture to families transitioning out of homelessness. Call ahead to confirm current needs.
