Wichita, Kansas (#52 nationally) is one of relatively few major U.S. cities where the City does not provide residential trash collection. Wichita operates a competitive free-market solid waste system with permitted private haulers under a 2012 Solid Waste Plan that requires all haulers to offer single-stream curbside recycling and a smaller-cart option. Residents choose their hauler from a list of permitted companies. The system is supported by strong public infrastructure: the Sedgwick County Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 801 Stillwell Street is free for residents (Tue–Fri 9 AM–5 PM, Sat 9 AM–3 PM), and PRo Kansas Recycling Center at 725 E. Clark accepts a wide variety of recyclables and electronics free as a community non-profit service. The Wichita MRF is operated by Waste Connections. This guide covers every disposal option for City of Wichita residents.

Free options at a glance

Although Wichita doesn’t provide city collection, the County and a strong network of community recyclers handle the items most cities require. The Sedgwick County HHW Facility is free. Multiple electronics recyclers accept e-waste free, including PRo Kansas (a community non-profit). Donation programs are robust.

Permitted private hauler service

Hauler rates vary

Choosing a permitted hauler

Wichita’s 2012 Solid Waste Plan replaced an earlier proposal for a city-controlled hauler cooperative with a competitive free-market system that mandates baseline service standards. The system protects consumer choice while requiring all haulers to offer recycling and lower-rate small-cart options.

What every permitted hauler must offer:

· Single-stream curbside recycling

· A smaller cart size option at a lower rate

· A city-issued decal on both sides of the truck

What varies by hauler:

· Pricing (the City offers a Quarterly Trash Hauling Rate Survey to help residents compare; the data is published in PDF/Excel format)

· Collection day

· Bulk pickup policy — how many free pickups per year, item limits, fees

· Yard waste availability and pricing

· Holiday delays

Typical service:

· Weekly trash collection on assigned day (varies by hauler)

· Weekly recycling collection (usually same day as trash)

· Place carts at curb by 7:00 AM on collection day

· Maintain 3-foot clearance around carts; lids closed completely

Holiday schedules vary by hauler. There is no single city-wide holiday policy. Most major haulers observe the same federal holidays and typically delay pickup by one day for the remainder of the week. Sign up for your hauler’s notifications.

Customer service issues: Contact your private hauler directly — the City of Wichita does not collect trash and cannot resolve missed pickup complaints. If your hauler is unresponsive or refuses to offer required services, contact the City’s Environmental Health Division at 316-268-8351.

Sedgwick County HHW Facility

· Some electronics — call ahead to confirm specifics

Important battery rules: HHW accepts lithium batteries from handheld tools or devices only. No lithium car batteries, hoverboard/scooter batteries. Disposable vape pens and e-cigarettes (which use lithium batteries) should NOT be thrown in the trash. Guidelines change — call ahead.

Auto parts stores (alternative for car batteries):

Donation pickup, what gets accepted

Donation programs accept items in good usable condition: clean upholstered furniture without significant tears or stains, working appliances less than 10 years old, mattresses in good condition (subject to program rules), kitchenware, lamps, and most household goods.

Items typically not accepted: damaged or stained furniture, mattresses with bedbug history or significant wear, appliances that don’t work, particle-board furniture in poor condition, cribs (federal safety regulations have changed), and exercise equipment that requires reassembly. Always call the program before scheduling.

For items beyond your hauler’s bulk allowance, items hauled-related fees, or households needing in-home loading, paid options are available.

Hauler bulk pickup

Per-item or annual fee

Most permitted Wichita haulers offer bulk pickup as either a per-item add-on or as a few free annual pickups bundled with service. Compare bulk policies when choosing your hauler.
