Every route for a air conditioner in New York, checked in October 2026 against the city’s current rules and the drop-off sites named. The full New York guide covers every other item.
Here is how each route works in New York, starting with the city program and ending with paid pickup.
DSNY free curbside large-item collection: air conditioners
Free, with a required stepWindow and portable air conditioners contain refrigerant, so they need a free DSNY CFC removal appointment before collection, exactly like a refrigerator. Book through 311, set it out between 6 p.m. and midnight the evening before, and the tagged unit is collected on your next recycling day. Dehumidifiers follow the same rule.
Who qualifies: Every NYC residential address served by the Department of Sanitation, in all five boroughs. No appointment, no fee.
How to schedule: No scheduling. Set the item at the curb the evening before the right collection day for your address. Mostly metal or rigid plastic items go out on recycling day; everything else goes out on your trash-only day. Find your days at nyc.gov/dsny or by calling 311.
Limits: Up to 6 large items per collection day. Anything too big to fit in a bin or bag counts as a large item. More than 6 means spreading them across collection days.
Set-out: Place items at the curb in front of your building after 6 p.m. the evening before collection, without blocking the sidewalk. DSNY no longer offers pickup appointments for ordinary large items, so there is nothing to book.
DSNY CFC and Freon removal appointment: air conditioners
FreeRequired for air conditioners and dehumidifiers.
Where: Curbside at your address
How it works: Book online at nyc.gov/cfc or through 311, up to 10 appliances per appointment, no same-day slots. Set the appliance out between 6 p.m. and midnight the evening before. A DSNY crew removes the refrigerant and tags it; the tagged unit is collected on your next recycling day.
Freemoval (free pickups through partner organizations)
FreeFreemoval funds free junk removal and cleanouts for households referred by trusted partner organizations, such as nonprofits, housing programs, and senior services. Families don’t apply directly. A partner submits the request and vouches for the need.
Status in New York: Not yet available. Freemoval currently serves metro Atlanta and plans to expand nationwide.
How it works where it operates: One free pickup per household, covering air conditioners, furniture, appliances, and bulk household items within standard LoadUp marketplace service. Funded by LoadUp customer round-ups and direct contributions, spent at standard LoadUp rates.
If you run a nonprofit or housing program in New York: you can start the conversation now through the For partners page.
NYC underwent the biggest sanitation transformation in decades over the last two years, bulk pickup appointments were eliminated in favor of a no-scheduling system (set out up to 6 large items on your trash day), citywide composting became mandatory in April 2025, and the official NYC Bin will be required for buildings with 1-9 units starting June 2026. Mattresses must be in clear plastic bags and securely sealed to prevent bedbug spread, this is enforced. Special handling is required for Freon appliances and electronics. This page walks through every legitimate option in order from free to paid.
The New York rule for air conditioners: Window and portable air conditioners contain refrigerant, so they need a free DSNY CFC removal appointment before collection, exactly like a refrigerator. Book through 311, set it out between 6 p.m. and midnight the evening before, and the tagged unit is collected on your next recycling day. Dehumidifiers follow the same rule.

What the city will not take: Covered electronics (illegal at the curb under state law), car tires, appliances with refrigerant that have not had a free DSNY CFC removal, unbagged mattresses, and debris from professional contractors.
How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: DSNY: Large Items, DSNY: Furniture, Mattresses, and Rugs, DSNY: Appliances and CFC removal, NYC311: CFC and Freon Removal, DSNY: Electronics and E-Waste, DSNY: Construction Debris, DSNY: Automotive Waste (tires), DSNY: Plant, Leaf, and Yard Waste. Programs change; confirm fees and limits before you go.
Hazardous and regulated components in New York. NYC hosts SAFE (Solvents, Automotive, Flammable, Electronics) Disposal Events throughout the year for residents to dispose of hazardous waste, electronics, batteries, paint, motor oil, and fluorescent bulbs free of charge. Several retailers also offer ongoing free recycling: Home Depot for batteries and CFL bulbs, AutoZone for motor oil and car batteries, Best Buy for electronics, and most pharmacies for unused medications. Lithium-ion batteries are an especially serious concern in NYC, they cause fires inside collection trucks and at sorting facilities. Never put any battery in regular trash or recycling.
Why air conditioners are different from ordinary bulk. The refrigerant is the whole story. Older units use R-22, which was phased out of production in 2020; newer ones use R-410A, which is itself being phased down under the AIM Act. Both are potent greenhouse gases and both must be captured, which is why landfills refuse ACs and why some cities charge a small refrigerant recovery fee.
Three mistakes that get air conditioners left at the curb:
Paid options matter when the unit is a heavy central condenser with no contractor involved, or when the city only offers a drop-off you cannot get to.
HVAC technician refrigerant recovery
$50 to $150An EPA-certified technician can recover the refrigerant from a window unit or condenser at your home and tag it. After that, the unit is ordinary scrap metal and any recycler or bulk program will take it.
Worth it for central condensers that need to be moved by a general hauler rather than an HVAC company.

Does New York pick up air conditioners for free?
Yes, free, after a CFC removal appointment booked through 311. Without the DSNY tag the unit will not be collected.
How much does paid air conditioner removal cost in New York?
Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single air conditioner pickup in New York starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who need same-day or next-day service, exceed 6 items per collection day, or need items DSNY won’t take, LoadUp offers professional removal across all five boroughs with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.
Can I throw a window air conditioner in the trash?
No. Air conditioners contain refrigerant regulated under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, and landfills and transfer stations refuse them. Use a city appliance pickup, a scrap recycler with recovery equipment, or a retailer or utility takeback.
Do I have to remove the refrigerant myself?
You cannot legally do it without EPA certification. City programs, scrap yards with recovery equipment, and HVAC technicians handle it. Your job is to deliver the unit intact with the lines uncut.
Is there a fee to dispose of an air conditioner?
Many cities collect ACs free with appliance pickup. Some charge $10 to $30 for refrigerant recovery, and a few require drop-off at a solid waste facility. Scrap yards are usually free. HVAC technicians charge $50 to $150 for on-site recovery.
What about portable air conditioners on wheels?
Same rules. Portable units contain refrigerant and go through the same appliance channels as window units. Drain the condensate tank before moving it.
