How Spokane handles carpet and rugs

Spokane, Washington operates city-run municipal solid waste collection with a fee-based Load Truck service for bulk item pickup that requires a call to 311 in advance to send the right truck. The city also offers food and yard waste collection, weekly March through November and monthly in winter, one of the more year-round organics programs in the Pacific Northwest. A new 2026 appliance refrigerant fee of $30 applies at transfer stations. This guide covers every option for City of Spokane residents.

The Spokane rule for carpet and rugs: Paid pickup or the WTE facility by weight.

Program basics: Fees apply to everything bulky. Extra material next to the cart must be bundled and under 4 feet. The county transfer stations add $30 per refrigerant appliance. Only on a date arranged through 311, next to your cart. Loose bulky items at the curb otherwise are not collected.

What the city will not take: Nothing is collected free. Household hazardous waste and recyclables are free to drop off at the Waste to Energy Facility.

How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: City of Spokane Solid Waste Services: Residential Services, City of Spokane Solid Waste Services: Disposal locations and 2026 rates, Spokane County: Disposal and Transfer Stations (refrigerant fee). Why carpet and rugs are different from ordinary bulk. The volume is the first surprise. Carpet rolls do not compress, and a whole house of carpet can be 500 to 1,000 pounds spread over 15 to 25 rolls. Bulk programs set item limits that a whole-house removal exceeds, so staged pickups or a hauler are often needed.

Prep checklist before pickup day in Spokane

  • Pull the carpet from the tack strip at a corner with pliers and roll it back.
  • Cut strips 3 to 4 feet wide from the back side with a utility knife.
  • Roll each strip tightly and tie in two places; keep rolls under your city’s length limit.
  • Roll padding separately; pry up tack strips, wrap in cardboard nail side in, and tape.
  • Stage rolls neatly at the curb on the scheduled day and count them against the item limit.

Three mistakes that get carpet and rugs left at the curb:

  • Don't set out carpet in one giant roll. Cut it to the program's length limit and tie each roll or it will be skipped.
  • Don't mix padding into the carpet rolls. Roll it separately; it is often recyclable.
  • Don't leave tack strips loose. Wrap them in cardboard nail side in and tape.

Paid options are for whole-house tear-outs that exceed bulk limits and for contractor-generated carpet, which residential bulk programs exclude.

Self-haul to a transfer station or recycler

$20 to $80

Rolled carpet loads easily into a pickup or trailer. Transfer stations charge by weight; carpet recyclers charge a small per-pound fee or accept free where stewardship programs exist.

Weigh it in your head: about 0.5 pounds per square foot for carpet, 0.25 for padding.

Does Spokane pick up carpet and rugs for free?

Paid pickup or WTE by weight.

How much does paid carpet and rugs removal cost in Spokane?

Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single carpet pickup in Spokane starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For Spokane households who need same-day or in-home pickup, need crew labor, or want faster service than city programs allow, LoadUp connects you with independent loaders in the Spokane area.

Can I put old carpet out with bulk trash?

Yes in most cities, if it is cut into rolls under the program’s length limit (usually 4 to 6 feet), rolled tightly, and tied. Padding should be rolled separately. Contractor-generated carpet is usually excluded. Check your city’s rule below.

How do I cut and roll carpet for pickup?

Flip a section face down and cut strips 3 to 4 feet wide from the back with a utility knife and a straight edge. Roll each strip tightly and tie it in two places with twine or wrap it with tape. Keep rolls under about 50 pounds.

Is carpet recyclable?

Yes, though access varies. Nylon carpet is the most recyclable, and padding is widely recycled into new padding. California’s CARE program provides free drop-off statewide; elsewhere, carpet reclamation facilities and some flooring retailers accept it, sometimes for a small fee.

What do I do with the tack strips?

Pry them up with a flat bar, stack them nail side in, wrap tightly in cardboard, and tape. Put the bundle in the trash cart or with bulk, clearly wrapped so no one gets stuck.
