How Kansas City handles dressers

Kansas City, Missouri runs an unusually generous appointment-based system: FREE Bulky Item Pickup by appointment for single-family homes and apartments with 6 units or fewer, with a remarkably high limit of 15 items per appointment (no item over 500 lbs). Trash and recycling are funded through property taxes, no separate monthly bill. The catch is the strict cart rules: trash MUST be in the official City-issued cart, ALL trash inside the cart must be BAGGED (no loose trash), the lid must fully close, and the cart can’t exceed 250 lbs total. Glass is NOT accepted in curbside recycling, must be taken to drop-off locations. Refrigerators and freezers (CFC/Freon items) require a separate truck, must indicate when scheduling. Note: Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS are SEPARATE cities with separate programs, this page covers KCMO only. This page walks through every legitimate option in order from free to paid.

The Kansas City rule for dressers: A dresser is one listed item. Empty it.

Program basics: 15 items per appointment. Appliances must be emptied and cleaned. At your regular collection point on the appointment date, at least 4 feet from trash and recycling carts, nothing mixed with bagged trash.

What the city will not take: Waste tires, paint and household hazardous waste, yard waste, auto parts, loose building materials and masonry, damaged carts and bins, and anything from a business.

How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: KCMO 311: Bulky Item Pick-Up Service. Programs change; confirm fees and limits before you go.

Why dressers are different from ordinary bulk. Donation programs have tightened furniture standards. Most now refuse particleboard and laminate pieces, anything with a missing drawer or broken runner, and anything with water damage or odor. That eliminates a large share of the dressers people try to donate, which is why so many end up at the curb.

Prep checklist before pickup day in Kansas City

  • Empty every drawer and check the back for anything that fell behind.
  • Remove the drawers and stack them, or tape them shut with painter’s tape.
  • Detach an attached mirror and tape it in an X; mark it 'glass.'
  • Photograph it for a donation request or free listing before moving it.
  • Carry with two people and set out on the scheduled bulk day only.

Three mistakes that get dressers left at the curb:

  • Don't try to donate particleboard. Nearly every program refuses it; use a free listing or bulk pickup instead.
  • Don't carry a dresser downstairs with the drawers in. They slide out mid-stair. Remove them or tape them shut.
  • Don't leave a mirror attached for bulk pickup unless your city allows it. Remove, tape in an X, and mark it as glass.

Paid options are for buildings with no bulk service, multi-piece bedroom sets, or a dresser on a third floor with nobody to carry it.

Self-haul to a transfer station

$10 to $30

Drawers out, a dresser fits in most SUVs or a pickup. Transfer stations accept furniture by load or weight. Solid wood dressers can also go to a wood recycler in some regions.

Break down particleboard to cut the volume and the fee.

Common questions about dresser removal in Kansas City

Does Kansas City pick up dressers for free?

Yes, with a bulky appointment.

Where can I donate a dresser in Kansas City?

Kansas City’s donation programs accept items in good usable condition: clean upholstered furniture without significant tears or stains, working appliances less than 10 years old, mattresses in good condition (subject to program-specific rules), kitchenware, lamps, and most household goods.

How much does paid dresser removal cost in Kansas City?

Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single dresser pickup in Kansas City starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who need same-day or in-home pickup, exceed the 15-item or 500-lb limit, can’t wait for the next appointment, live in 7+ unit buildings without KCMO service, or want full-service hauling, LoadUp offers professional removal in Kansas City with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.

Can I put a dresser out for bulk pickup?

Yes in almost every city with a bulk program. Dressers are standard furniture. Confirm item limits and mirror rules in the directory below.

Will Goodwill or Salvation Army take a particleboard dresser?

Rarely. Most donation programs refuse particleboard, laminate, and flat-pack furniture because it does not survive transport and resale. Solid wood pieces in good condition are accepted.

How heavy is a dresser?

A solid wood six-drawer dresser weighs 150 to 250 pounds; a tall chest 100 to 180; a particleboard dresser 80 to 120. Removing the drawers cuts the carry weight by about a third.

How do I break down a particleboard dresser?

Remove the drawers, back the screws out of the cam locks or pry the panels apart, and knock the back panel off. The flat panels bundle for bulk pickup or fit in a car for a transfer station.

Is this Kansas City page maintained?

Yes. Freemoval maintains this page as a public resource alongside the full Kansas City guide. We update it when programs change rules, fees, or contact methods. Last updated October 2026. If you find outdated information, let us know.
