How Chattanooga handles hot tubs

Chattanooga runs a unique area-rotation bulk pickup system: FREE Brush & Bulky Trash Collection by 4 rotating service areas, NO appointment needed. The City is divided into Areas 1-4, and dedicated bulk trucks remain in each area for one week before rotating to the next, giving every street citywide coverage roughly once per month. Residents prepare separate piles for brush, bulk trash, bagged yard waste, and leaves at the curb by 7 AM Monday of their assigned collection week. Annual cap: maximum 12 brush collections + 12 bulk collections per single property per consecutive 12-month period. Service is restricted to residential properties only, NOT available to businesses, apartment complexes, or landlords. You or a relative must live at the address. Wood waste limit: 8 ft long, 18 in diameter, 4 ft high. Brush and bulk MUST NOT be mixed. Holiday schedule is one of the simplest in the country, only Thanksgiving and Christmas affect collection. This page walks through every legitimate option in order from free to paid.

The Chattanooga rule for hot tubs: A drained, broken-down tub can go out as bulk trash. Most people hire a crew.

Program basics: No published volume cap for ordinary household bulk; piles must not be mixed with garbage, brush, or unacceptable material. At the curb in front of the residence by 7 a.m. Monday of your collection week, not in alleys, not on sidewalks, parking areas, drainage ditches, water meters, or under low wires.

What the city will not take: Household garbage mixed in, construction debris, hazardous waste, and electronics. Appliances with refrigerant should be confirmed with 311 before set-out.

Hazardous and regulated components in Chattanooga. Chattanooga residents have free hazardous waste disposal at the City Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Call 311 at (423) 643-6311 for current location, hours, and accepted items. Free for Chattanooga residents. Drop off paint, motor oil, pesticides, household cleaners, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, propane tanks. Why hot tubs are different from ordinary bulk. Hot tubs combine multiple disposal challenges in one item: weight (a typical 6-person hot tub weighs 300 to 500 lbs empty, 3,000+ lbs filled), size (typically 7 to 8 ft square or larger), specialized utilities (220V electrical, dedicated plumbing connections), and assembly complexity (rigid acrylic shell, foam insulation, frame, decorative skirt, jets, pumps, heaters).

Prep checklist before pickup day in Chattanooga

Three mistakes that get hot tubs left at the curb:

  • Don’t leave a hot tub at the curb without confirming city rules. Most cities exclude hot tubs from bulk pickup, an unscheduled hot tub will sit there indefinitely.
  • Don’t skip electrical disconnect. Hot tubs run on 220V dedicated circuits, disconnect must be performed at the breaker panel by a licensed electrician in most municipalities. Cutting power to “the spa” alone isn’t sufficient.
  • Don’t drain the hot tub directly into a sewer line if it has chlorine. Many municipalities prohibit chlorinated water in storm drains and sewer lines without dechlorination. Either let chlorine dissipate naturally for 1 to 2 weeks, or use a dechlorinating agent before draining.

Common questions about hot tub removal in Chattanooga

Does Chattanooga pick up hot tubs for free?

Possibly, broken down. Most people hire a crew.

How much does paid hot tub removal cost in Chattanooga?

Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single hot tub pickup in Chattanooga starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who can’t wait for their area’s rotation week, exceed the 12 collections per type per 12 months, live in apartment buildings without City service, have construction debris (NOT eligible for City service), exceed wood waste size limits (over 8 ft / 18 in / 4 ft), or want full-service in-home pickup, LoadUp offers professional removal in Chattanooga with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal. LoadUp’s headquarters is in Atlanta, Chattanooga is part of our home market.

How much does professional hot tub removal cost?

Typical pricing ranges $300 to $800 for above-ground hot tubs, $500 to $1,200+ for in-ground or hard-to-access installations. The cost reflects 3 to 6 hours of labor with multiple crew members, specialized equipment for disassembly, electrical and plumbing disconnects, and disposal fees. Always get 2 to 3 quotes, prices vary significantly by region and accessibility.

Can I sell a non-working hot tub?

Sometimes. Non-working hot tubs occasionally find buyers who want them for: (1) Repair and resale, some buyers fix and flip. (2) Parts, the pumps, heaters, and jets have resale value separate from the shell. (3) Scrap metal, the frame contains 50 to 150 lbs of steel. List on Craigslist Free section or Facebook Marketplace at $0 with details about what works and what doesn’t. The key benefit even at $0: the buyer handles removal, saving you $300 to $800 in paid hauler fees.

Can I just drain it and leave it for trash collection?

Generally no. Most U.S. cities explicitly exclude hot tubs from regular bulk pickup because of weight (300+ lbs even drained) and size. A hot tub left at the curb without confirmed pickup will sit there, accumulate code enforcement notices, and may result in fines that exceed the cost of paid removal. Always check your city’s rules before any DIY approach, the city section above has summaries.

Do I need a permit to remove a hot tub?

For above-ground hot tubs, no permit is typically required for removal, just for installation. For in-ground hot tubs, removal may require a permit because of the excavation and electrical work involved. Some HOAs also require notification or approval for hot tub removal, especially if visible from common areas. Check with your municipality and HOA before starting work, and confirm with your removal service that they’ll handle any required permits as part of their pricing.
