A public resource guide
Hot tubs are one of the most challenging items to dispose of, they’re heavy, large, and not eligible for most cities’ bulk pickup programs. Here’s every legitimate option.

Hot tubs (also called spas or jacuzzis) are one of the hardest household items to dispose of legally. The challenges: they’re extraordinarily heavy (300–1,500 lbs even drained), they exceed most cities’ bulk pickup size and weight limits, they require specialized disassembly to fit through normal access points, and they often have plumbing and electrical components that need professional disconnection. Most U.S. cities exclude hot tubs from regular bulk pickup entirely, or accept only fully drained, disassembled units in pieces under specific size limits. The most common path is professional removal: paid haulers ($300–$800 typical) handle drainage, disconnection, disassembly, lifting, and disposal. This guide covers every legitimate option including DIY paths if you have the time and equipment.
On this page
Hot tubs combine multiple disposal challenges in one item: weight (a typical 6-person hot tub weighs 300–500 lbs empty, 3,000+ lbs filled), size (typically 7–8 ft square or larger), specialized utilities (220V electrical, dedicated plumbing connections), and assembly complexity (rigid acrylic shell, foam insulation, frame, decorative skirt, jets, pumps, heaters).
Most city bulk pickup programs explicitly exclude hot tubs because (a) standard bulk crews can’t safely lift them, and (b) the disassembly required to make them fit specifications takes hours.
The federal-level concerns: refrigerants in some hot tubs (cooling models) require certified drainage like refrigerators. Local concerns: many municipalities require hot tub electrical disconnects be performed by licensed electricians.
Free options for hot tubs are limited, most paths require paid services. The free routes:
Sell or Give Away (Working Hot Tubs)
Free, often quickWorking hot tubs in good condition typically find buyers via Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or OfferUp within 1–2 weeks. Even older hot tubs sell for $200–$1,000 if working. Buyer typically handles disassembly and removal themselves, which is the biggest practical benefit.
Even non-working hot tubs sometimes find takers (“free, you remove”) for the metal scrap value plus the buyer’s time.
List details that matter: Model, age, working status, dimensions, electrical specs, access notes (stairs, gates, narrow doorways).
DIY Disassembly + City Bulk Pickup
Free if eligibleSome cities accept hot tubs in pieces under specific dimensions IF you fully disassemble. Drain completely, disconnect utilities, remove the skirt, separate the shell from the frame, cut the shell into pieces under your city’s size limits (typically 6–8 ft long max), and place all pieces at the curb during your bulk pickup window.
Time investment: Labor-intensive (4–8 hours typical for a 6-person hot tub) but eliminates the $300–$800 paid hauler cost.
Verify first: Check your city’s rules before starting, some cities exclude hot tubs entirely. See the city section below.
Donation to Recreation Programs
Free, working onlyWorking hot tubs sometimes find takers via local recreation programs, community centers, or veterans’ organizations, especially the smaller portable models. Call ahead. Donation programs typically require the buyer to handle pickup, but having a recipient identified can simplify a free Craigslist or Marketplace listing.
For households without time or equipment for DIY disassembly:
LoadUp paid pickup (specialized hot tub removal)
$300–$800For households who need full-service hot tub removal, drainage, electrical disconnection, disassembly, and hauling, LoadUp offers specialized hot tub removal nationwide with upfront pricing. Crew brings tools and equipment for safe disassembly. Pricing reflects the labor-intensive nature of the work (typically 3–6 person crew, 3–6 hours on-site). Licensed disposal at certified facilities.
If you can pay for a pickup, your booking helps fund free pickups for someone else. Every paid LoadUp customer can opt in to round up at checkout, and 100% of round-ups go directly to Freemoval’s subsidized jobs.
Book a hot tub pickup with LoadUp → Round-up option appears at checkout. Optional, opt-in only.
Specialized Hot Tub Removal Services
$300–$1,200Many local junk removal companies have hot-tub-specific service lines. Search “hot tub removal [your city]” for specialists. Pricing ranges $300–$1,200 depending on size, complexity (above-ground vs. in-ground), and access (basement hot tubs cost more due to stair handling). Always get 2–3 quotes, pricing varies dramatically by region.
Roll-Off Dumpster (DIY Disposal)
$300–$500Renting a 20-yard roll-off dumpster ($300–$500/week typical) lets you handle disassembly yourself but offload the disposal. Drain, disconnect, disassemble, fill the dumpster with the pieces, and the dumpster company hauls it away.
Often cheapest for in-ground hot tubs that require excavation work to remove, you can use the same dumpster for concrete debris.
Most cities exclude hot tubs from regular bulk pickup entirely because of weight and size. Where pickup is possible, it typically requires complete disassembly into pieces under the city’s standard bulk size limits. How much does professional hot tub removal cost?
Typical pricing ranges $300–$800 for above-ground hot tubs, $500–$1,200+ for in-ground or hard-to-access installations. The cost reflects 3–6 hours of labor with multiple crew members, specialized equipment for disassembly, electrical and plumbing disconnects, and disposal fees. Always get 2–3 quotes, prices vary significantly by region and accessibility.
Can I sell a non-working hot tub?
Sometimes. Non-working hot tubs occasionally find buyers who want them for: (1) Repair and resale, some buyers fix and flip. (2) Parts, the pumps, heaters, and jets have resale value separate from the shell. (3) Scrap metal, the frame contains 50–150 lbs of steel. List on Craigslist Free section or Facebook Marketplace at $0 with details about what works and what doesn’t. The key benefit even at $0: the buyer handles removal, saving you $300–$800 in paid hauler fees.
Can I just drain it and leave it for trash collection?
Generally no. Most U.S. cities explicitly exclude hot tubs from regular bulk pickup because of weight (300+ lbs even drained) and size. A hot tub left at the curb without confirmed pickup will sit there, accumulate code enforcement notices, and may result in fines that exceed the cost of paid removal. Always check your city’s rules before any DIY approach, the city section above has summaries.
Do I need a permit to remove a hot tub?
For above-ground hot tubs, no permit is typically required for removal, just for installation. For in-ground hot tubs, removal may require a permit because of the excavation and electrical work involved. Some HOAs also require notification or approval for hot tub removal, especially if visible from common areas. Check with your municipality and HOA before starting work, and confirm with your removal service that they’ll handle any required permits as part of their pricing.
How long does professional removal take?
A typical 6-person above-ground hot tub takes a 3–4 person crew 2–4 hours on-site for full removal: assess access, disconnect electrical and plumbing, drain remaining water, remove cover and steps, disassemble shell from frame, cut shell into manageable pieces, load and haul. In-ground hot tubs take 1–2 days because of excavation and concrete work. Schedule appropriate time when booking.
