Free hot tub removal in Houston

Here is how each route works in Houston, starting with the city program and ending with paid pickup.

Houston heavy trash (junk waste) collection: hot tubs

Free, with a step first

Nothing on Houston's list excludes a drained, disconnected hot tub, but it must fit within 8 cubic yards and sit behind the curb without blocking anything. Break it down if you can; most people use a crew.

Who qualifies: Occupied residential units with City of Houston curbside service, in buildings of 8 units or fewer. Larger complexes use private haulers.

How to schedule: No appointment. Heavy trash is collected every other month on your assigned day; look up your address with the city's service lookup tool or the HTX Collects app. Junk waste (furniture, appliances, mattresses) is collected in the even months: February, April, June, August, October, December. Odd months are tree waste only.

Limits: Up to 8 cubic yards per set-out, about a minivan's worth, with six collections a year. Resident-generated building material is capped at 4 cubic yards of that and cannot include shingles, brick, plaster, or concrete.

Set-out: Place items just behind the curb line in front of your home between 6 p.m. the Friday before and 7 a.m. on your collection day. Not in the street, not on the sidewalk, not under wires or on top of meters. If allowed and prohibited items are mixed, the whole pile can be refused.

How Houston handles hot tubs

Houston has one of the more complex bulk pickup systems in the U.S., and it changed materially in March 2026: heavy trash now requires a 311 scheduling call. Combined with the alternating Tree Waste / Junk Waste cycle and the six free Neighborhood Depository & Recycling Centers, Houston residents have several legitimate options. This page walks through every one in order from free to paid.

The Houston rule for hot tubs: Nothing on Houston's list excludes a drained, disconnected hot tub, but it must fit within 8 cubic yards and sit behind the curb without blocking anything. Break it down if you can; most people use a crew.

Program basics: Up to 8 cubic yards per set-out, about a minivan's worth, with six collections a year. Resident-generated building material is capped at 4 cubic yards of that and cannot include shingles, brick, plaster, or concrete. Place items just behind the curb line in front of your home between 6 p.m. the Friday before and 7 a.m. on your collection day. Not in the street, not on the sidewalk, not under wires or on top of meters. If allowed and prohibited items are mixed, the whole pile can be refused.

What the city will not take: Electronics, paint, chemicals and other household hazardous waste, dirt and sod, roofing shingles, refrigerant appliances without a certified technician's tag, and anything generated by a contractor.

How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: Houston Solid Waste Management: Heavy Trash Collection (Bulk and Tree Waste), Houston Solid Waste Management: Residential Drop-Off locations, Houston Solid Waste Management: Environmental Service Centers. Programs change; confirm fees and limits before you go.

Hazardous and regulated components in Houston. Houston operates several Environmental Service Centers (ESCs) that accept household hazardous waste from city residents at no charge. Several retailers offer ongoing free recycling: Home Depot for batteries and CFL bulbs, AutoZone for motor oil and car batteries, Best Buy for electronics, and most pharmacies for unused medications.

Why hot tubs are different from ordinary bulk. Hot tubs combine multiple disposal challenges in one item: weight (a typical 6-person hot tub weighs 300 to 500 lbs empty, 3,000+ lbs filled), size (typically 7 to 8 ft square or larger), specialized utilities (220V electrical, dedicated plumbing connections), and assembly complexity (rigid acrylic shell, foam insulation, frame, decorative skirt, jets, pumps, heaters).

Prep checklist before pickup day in Houston

Three mistakes that get hot tubs left at the curb:

  • Don’t leave a hot tub at the curb without confirming city rules. Most cities exclude hot tubs from bulk pickup, an unscheduled hot tub will sit there indefinitely.
  • Don’t skip electrical disconnect. Hot tubs run on 220V dedicated circuits, disconnect must be performed at the breaker panel by a licensed electrician in most municipalities. Cutting power to “the spa” alone isn’t sufficient.
  • Don’t drain the hot tub directly into a sewer line if it has chlorine. Many municipalities prohibit chlorinated water in storm drains and sewer lines without dechlorination. Either let chlorine dissipate naturally for 1 to 2 weeks, or use a dechlorinating agent before draining.

For households without time or equipment for DIY disassembly:

Common questions about hot tub removal in Houston

Does Houston pick up hot tubs for free?

Possibly, drained and disconnected, within 8 cubic yards, on an even-month heavy trash day. Most people hire a crew.

How much does paid hot tub removal cost in Houston?

Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single hot tub pickup in Houston starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who need same-week service, have items the city won’t take, or have more than 8 cubic yards, LoadUp offers professional removal in Houston with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.

How much does professional hot tub removal cost?

Typical pricing ranges $300 to $800 for above-ground hot tubs, $500 to $1,200+ for in-ground or hard-to-access installations. The cost reflects 3 to 6 hours of labor with multiple crew members, specialized equipment for disassembly, electrical and plumbing disconnects, and disposal fees. Always get 2 to 3 quotes, prices vary significantly by region and accessibility.

Can I sell a non-working hot tub?

Sometimes. Non-working hot tubs occasionally find buyers who want them for: (1) Repair and resale, some buyers fix and flip. (2) Parts, the pumps, heaters, and jets have resale value separate from the shell. (3) Scrap metal, the frame contains 50 to 150 lbs of steel. List on Craigslist Free section or Facebook Marketplace at $0 with details about what works and what doesn’t. The key benefit even at $0: the buyer handles removal, saving you $300 to $800 in paid hauler fees.

Can I just drain it and leave it for trash collection?

Generally no. Most U.S. cities explicitly exclude hot tubs from regular bulk pickup because of weight (300+ lbs even drained) and size. A hot tub left at the curb without confirmed pickup will sit there, accumulate code enforcement notices, and may result in fines that exceed the cost of paid removal. Always check your city’s rules before any DIY approach, the city section above has summaries.

Do I need a permit to remove a hot tub?

For above-ground hot tubs, no permit is typically required for removal, just for installation. For in-ground hot tubs, removal may require a permit because of the excavation and electrical work involved. Some HOAs also require notification or approval for hot tub removal, especially if visible from common areas. Check with your municipality and HOA before starting work, and confirm with your removal service that they’ll handle any required permits as part of their pricing.
