Here is how each route works in Oakland, starting with the city program and ending with paid pickup.
Oakland Bulky Pickup (Waste Management of Alameda County): hot tubs
Free, with a step firstA drained, broken-down tub may fit within 4 cubic yards; confirm with WM. Most people hire a crew.
Who qualifies: Oakland residents. Single-family homes and buildings with 4 or fewer units get 2 free curbside pickups a year; renters in larger buildings get 1 per unit per year, scheduled by the property manager or by the tenant with a signed waiver.
How to schedule: Call 1-888-WM-BULKY (or 510-613-8710) or request online at oaklandrecycles.com. Pickup lands on your regular collection day. Each household can also use 1 free drop-off a year at the Davis Street Transfer Station, and the city's quarterly Bulky Block Parties take large items free with proof of residency.
Limits: Up to about 4 cubic yards per curbside pickup. Pickups do not roll over between years.
Set-out: At the curb on your confirmed collection day only. Bulky items at the curb without an appointment are illegal dumping, which Oakland enforces heavily.

Oakland runs one of the most equitable bulky waste systems in California: all residents, both owners AND renters, single-family homes AND apartments, get FREE bulky item pickup AND free drop-off at the Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex, both included in trash service. Up to 4 cubic yards per appointment, scheduled via 1-888-WM-BULKY. Single-family homes can request a SECOND curbside pickup annually for free 45 days after using one drop-off and one curbside pickup. Oakland has an unusual two-company waste system: Waste Management of Alameda County (WM) handles trash and compost, California Waste Solutions (CWS) handles recycling, batteries, and used motor oil, two separate trucks, same collection day. Composting is MANDATORY under California SB 1383, enforced by Alameda County’s StopWaste with fines starting at $50-$100 per inspection up to $500 for continued non-compliance. Free curbside motor oil pickup is unique to Oakland, CWS picks up oil jugs and filter bags next to your blue cart. This page walks through every legitimate option in order from free to paid.
The Oakland rule for hot tubs: A drained, broken-down tub may fit within 4 cubic yards; confirm with WM. Most people hire a crew.
Program basics: Up to about 4 cubic yards per curbside pickup. Pickups do not roll over between years. At the curb on your confirmed collection day only. Bulky items at the curb without an appointment are illegal dumping, which Oakland enforces heavily.
What the city will not take: Household hazardous waste (paint, oil, chemicals, batteries, propane) and construction debris. Appliances and electronics are accepted.
How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: City of Oakland: Bulky Block Party events and bulky pickup options (July 2026), City of Oakland: Bulky Block Party service page. Programs change; confirm fees and limits before you go.
Hazardous and regulated components in Oakland. Oakland residents have free hazardous waste disposal through the Alameda County HHW Program at 1-800-606-6606. The program accepts paint, motor oil (beyond the curbside option), pesticides, household cleaners, batteries (large quantities), fluorescent bulbs, and propane tanks. Free for Alameda County residents. WM’s bulky pickup and Davis Street drop-off do NOT accept hazardous or medical waste. Several retailers also offer ongoing free recycling: Home Depot for batteries and CFL bulbs, AutoZone for motor oil and car batteries (in addition to Oakland’s free curbside oil pickup), Best Buy for electronics. The unique value of Oakland’s motor oil curbside system is that it eliminates the most common reason people improperly dispose of motor oil, the inconvenience of getting to a drop-off facility.
Why hot tubs are different from ordinary bulk. Hot tubs combine multiple disposal challenges in one item: weight (a typical 6-person hot tub weighs 300 to 500 lbs empty, 3,000+ lbs filled), size (typically 7 to 8 ft square or larger), specialized utilities (220V electrical, dedicated plumbing connections), and assembly complexity (rigid acrylic shell, foam insulation, frame, decorative skirt, jets, pumps, heaters).
Three mistakes that get hot tubs left at the curb:
For households without time or equipment for DIY disassembly:

Always get 2 to 3 quotes, pricing varies dramatically by region.

Does Oakland pick up hot tubs for free?
Confirm with WM. Most people hire a crew.
How much does paid hot tub removal cost in Oakland?
Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single hot tub pickup in Oakland starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who need same-day or in-home pickup, exceed the 4 cubic yard limit per appointment, can’t wait for the next available WM appointment, have items WM/CWS won’t accept, or want full-service hauling, LoadUp offers professional removal in Oakland with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.
How much does professional hot tub removal cost?
Typical pricing ranges $300 to $800 for above-ground hot tubs, $500 to $1,200+ for in-ground or hard-to-access installations. The cost reflects 3 to 6 hours of labor with multiple crew members, specialized equipment for disassembly, electrical and plumbing disconnects, and disposal fees. Always get 2 to 3 quotes, prices vary significantly by region and accessibility.
Can I sell a non-working hot tub?
Sometimes. Non-working hot tubs occasionally find buyers who want them for: (1) Repair and resale, some buyers fix and flip. (2) Parts, the pumps, heaters, and jets have resale value separate from the shell. (3) Scrap metal, the frame contains 50 to 150 lbs of steel. List on Craigslist Free section or Facebook Marketplace at $0 with details about what works and what doesn’t. The key benefit even at $0: the buyer handles removal, saving you $300 to $800 in paid hauler fees.
Can I just drain it and leave it for trash collection?
Generally no. Most U.S. cities explicitly exclude hot tubs from regular bulk pickup because of weight (300+ lbs even drained) and size. A hot tub left at the curb without confirmed pickup will sit there, accumulate code enforcement notices, and may result in fines that exceed the cost of paid removal. Always check your city’s rules before any DIY approach, the city section above has summaries.
Do I need a permit to remove a hot tub?
For above-ground hot tubs, no permit is typically required for removal, just for installation. For in-ground hot tubs, removal may require a permit because of the excavation and electrical work involved. Some HOAs also require notification or approval for hot tub removal, especially if visible from common areas. Check with your municipality and HOA before starting work, and confirm with your removal service that they’ll handle any required permits as part of their pricing.
