Austin Resource Recovery on-demand bulk collection: lawn mowers
FreeLawn mowers are explicitly accepted once the gas and oil are removed. Fuel and oil go through Austin's on-demand household hazardous waste collection or the Drop-Off Center.
Who qualifies: Austin Resource Recovery curbside customers: single-family homes up to fourplexes. Larger complexes contract their own haulers.
How to schedule: Since January 2025 bulk is collected on demand, not on fixed weeks. Schedule through austintexas.gov or 3-1-1, up to 3 bulk collections per calendar year (brush, household hazardous waste, and textiles each have their own 3). Extra collections are available for a fee.
Limits: 3 bulk collections a year. Items are sorted into three piles at the curb: metal, passenger tires (rims off, up to 8), and everything else.
Set-out: Put items at the curb only on your scheduled date, in place by 5:30 a.m., in three separate piles, clear of cars, poles, and meters. Material left out before the date is an illegal dumping issue.
Austin Recycle and Reuse Drop-Off Center: lawn mowers
Free by appointmentGasoline and oil are accepted.
Where: 2514 Business Center Dr, Austin, TX 78744
How it works: Free for Austin Resource Recovery customers by appointment. Household hazardous waste, electronics, tires, and reusable items. Book through austintexas.gov.
Freemoval (free pickups through partner organizations)
FreeFreemoval funds free junk removal and cleanouts for households referred by trusted partner organizations, such as nonprofits, housing programs, and senior services. Families don’t apply directly. A partner submits the request and vouches for the need.
Status in Austin: Not yet available. Freemoval currently serves metro Atlanta and plans to expand nationwide.
How it works where it operates: One free pickup per household, covering lawn mowers, furniture, appliances, and bulk household items within standard LoadUp marketplace service. Funded by LoadUp customer round-ups and direct contributions, spent at standard LoadUp rates.
If you run a nonprofit or housing program in Austin: you can start the conversation now through the For partners page.
Austin’s bulk system changed materially in January 2025, Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) moved from a predetermined biannual schedule to on-demand collection with up to 3 appointments per service type per calendar year. New on-demand household hazardous waste pickup launched the same day. This page walks through every option in order from free to paid, including the strict 5+ unit cutoff that excludes most apartment buildings.
The Austin rule for lawn mowers: Lawn mowers are explicitly accepted once the gas and oil are removed. Fuel and oil go through Austin's on-demand household hazardous waste collection or the Drop-Off Center.
Program basics: 3 bulk collections a year. Items are sorted into three piles at the curb: metal, passenger tires (rims off, up to 8), and everything else. Put items at the curb only on your scheduled date, in place by 5:30 a.m., in three separate piles, clear of cars, poles, and meters. Material left out before the date is an illegal dumping issue.
What the city will not take: Brush (separate service), cardboard, construction and remodeling debris including sheet glass, tile, and mirrors, carpet from construction, hazardous materials, household trash, tires still on rims, and vehicles, boats, and trailers.
How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: Austin Resource Recovery Administrative Rules (Chapter 15-6), on-demand bulk and brush guidelines, Austin American-Statesman summary of ARR's accepted and not-accepted bulk items (August 2026). Programs change; confirm fees and limits before you go.
Hazardous and regulated components in Austin. Austin offers two free HHW disposal options for residents. On-demand HHW pickup launched January 2025, up to 3 collections per year via the Austin Recycles app or 3-1-1. The Recycle & Reuse Drop-Off Center accepts HHW year-round by appointment. Several retailers also offer ongoing free recycling: Home Depot for batteries and CFL bulbs, AutoZone for motor oil and car batteries, Best Buy for electronics, and most pharmacies for unused medications.
Why lawn mowers are different from ordinary bulk. Fuel and oil are hazardous household waste. A mower set out with gas in the tank will be skipped by most bulk crews and refused by scrap yards, and residual oil leaks onto the truck bed. Draining both takes ten minutes but is the step everyone skips.
Three mistakes that get lawn mowers left at the curb:
Paid pickup is mostly for riding mowers that will not fit a bulk program and have no scrapper nearby.
Self-haul to a scrap yard or transfer station
Free to $20A push mower fits in any trunk with the handle folded. A rider needs a trailer or ramps into a pickup. Scrap yards take both free; transfer stations charge a small bulky fee.
Drain fluids before loading so nothing spills in the vehicle.

Yes, drained of gas and oil, in the metal pile. Fuel and oil go to HHW.
How much does paid lawn mower removal cost in Austin?
Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single lawn mower pickup in Austin starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who need same-week service, exceed 3 annual ARR collections, or live in 5+ unit buildings (excluded from city pickup), LoadUp offers professional removal in Austin with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.
Can I put a lawn mower out with bulk trash?
Push mowers, yes, in most cities, provided the gas and oil are drained. Riding mowers usually exceed bulk weight limits and go to a scrap yard or paid pickup. Check your city’s rule in the directory below.
How do I drain the gas and oil?
Run the mower until it stalls or siphon the tank into an approved gas can. Then tip the mower with the spark plug side up and drain the oil through the fill tube into a pan, or remove the drain plug underneath. Take both to an auto parts store or HHW facility.
Will a scrap yard pay for a lawn mower?
A few dollars for a push mower, more for a rider. The aluminum engine block has the most value. Many people find the free pickup more useful than the payout.
What do I do with the battery from a riding mower?
It is a 12V lead-acid battery accepted free at any auto parts store, often with a core credit, and at HHW facilities. Never put it in the trash.
