Push mowers, riding mowers, and battery mowers each have one thing that blocks the trash route: gasoline, a lead-acid battery, or a lithium pack. Remove it and the rest is scrap metal.

A gas push mower is 60 to 90 pounds of steel deck, aluminum engine block, and a small amount of fuel and oil. A riding mower is 400 to 600 pounds and adds a lead-acid battery, tires, and a hydrostatic transmission. Electric mowers swap the engine for a motor and either a cord or a lithium battery pack. In every case the disposal rule is the same: remove the fuel, oil, and battery first, because those are what landfills and bulk crews reject. After that, mowers are scrap metal that recyclers, repair shops, and many city programs accept for free.

Fuel and oil are hazardous household waste. A mower set out with gas in the tank will be skipped by most bulk crews and refused by scrap yards, and residual oil leaks onto the truck bed. Draining both takes ten minutes but is the step everyone skips.
Batteries are the second blocker. Riding mowers use a 12V lead-acid battery that auto parts stores accept free. Cordless mowers use a lithium-ion pack that must go to a battery recycler, a retailer takeback bin, or a household hazardous waste facility; lithium packs in trash trucks cause fires.
Size is the final issue for riding mowers. Most bulk programs set a weight limit that a lawn tractor exceeds, so riders go to scrap yards, equipment dealers on trade, or paid pickup.
Nearly every mower can be disposed of free once the fluids and battery are out.
Scrap yards and free scrap pickup
Free, sometimes paid to youA mower deck is steel and the engine is largely aluminum, both of which scrap yards buy. Listing a drained mower as free scrap on Marketplace or Craigslist usually gets a pickup the same day. Riding mowers are picked up free by scrappers because of the weight of metal.
Drain fuel and oil first. Yards refuse mowers with fluids and some charge a fee if they find them.
Remove the battery from riders and take it to an auto parts store, where it is accepted free and often earns a core credit.
Small engine repair shops and dealers
FreeIndependent small engine shops often take old mowers for parts at no charge, and equipment dealers accept trade-ins or free drop-offs of riding mowers when you buy new. A mower that runs rough is a parts source to a shop.
Call first. Shops take mowers seasonally when they have space.
Running mowers sell quickly on local listings for $25 to $100; a working rider for several hundred.
City bulk pickup for push mowers
Free in most citiesMost bulk programs accept push mowers, including electric, as a large item provided fuel and oil are drained. Riding mowers exceed the weight limit in most programs. A few cities exclude any gas engine equipment and refer residents to HHW events.
Leave the gas cap off so crews can see the tank is empty.
Cordless mowers: remove the lithium pack before set-out and take it to a battery drop-off.
Household hazardous waste drop-off for fuel, oil, and batteries
FreeThe gasoline, used oil, and lithium battery from a mower are all accepted at HHW facilities and events. Used oil and lead-acid batteries are also accepted free at most auto parts stores, and lithium packs at retailer battery drop-off bins.
Stale gas can be mixed in small amounts into a car's tank if it is less than a year old; otherwise HHW.
Lithium packs should be taped at the terminals before transport.
Paid pickup is mostly for riding mowers that will not fit a bulk program and have no scrapper nearby.
Self-haul to a scrap yard or transfer station
Free to $20A push mower fits in any trunk with the handle folded. A rider needs a trailer or ramps into a pickup. Scrap yards take both free; transfer stations charge a small bulky fee.

Can I put a lawn mower out with bulk trash?
Push mowers, yes, in most cities, provided the gas and oil are drained. Riding mowers usually exceed bulk weight limits and go to a scrap yard or paid pickup. Check your city's rule in the directory below.
How do I drain the gas and oil?
Run the mower until it stalls or siphon the tank into an approved gas can. Then tip the mower with the spark plug side up and drain the oil through the fill tube into a pan, or remove the drain plug underneath. Take both to an auto parts store or HHW facility.
Will a scrap yard pay for a lawn mower?
A few dollars for a push mower, more for a rider. The aluminum engine block has the most value. Many people find the free pickup more useful than the payout.
What do I do with the battery from a riding mower?
It is a 12V lead-acid battery accepted free at any auto parts store, often with a core credit, and at HHW facilities. Never put it in the trash.
What about the battery from a cordless electric mower?
Lithium-ion packs go to a retailer battery drop-off bin, a Call2Recycle location, or an HHW facility. Tape the terminals. The mower body without the pack is ordinary scrap or bulk.
Can I donate a mower that still runs?
Yes. Habitat ReStores, thrift stores, and community tool libraries accept running mowers, and local listings move them fast. Drain the gas before transporting it in a car.
What does LoadUp charge to remove a mower?
A push mower prices at the single-item minimum, around $80 to $100 in most metros. Riding mowers price higher because of weight. Independent loaders on the LoadUp marketplace ask that fuel be drained before pickup.
