Republic Services bulk item collection (City of Las Vegas): refrigerators

Separate appliance pickup, fee may apply

Republic's Southern Nevada bulk guidance says no refrigerators or anything containing Freon. Call 702-735-5151 to schedule a separate appliance pickup (a fee may apply), or take it to a transfer station for a fee. Remove the door either way.

Who qualifies: Single-family homes with Republic Services residential collection in the City of Las Vegas. Apartments use their property's dumpster service.

How to schedule: No appointment. Bulk items are collected every other week on an A/B schedule on your regular collection day; look up your address at republicservices.com or call 702-735-5151. Freon appliances need a separate scheduled appliance pickup through Republic, which may carry a fee.

Limits: Items no longer than 6 feet, in manageable pieces, generally one major appliance per bulk day. Larger loads or same-day requests are billed as special pickups.

Set-out: At the curb by 6 a.m. on your bulk week collection day, separate from carts, not on private property. Items left out on a non-bulk week are a code issue.

Donation pickup in Las Vegas (usable refrigerators)

Free

Las Vegas’s donation programs accept items in good usable condition: clean upholstered furniture without significant tears or stains, working appliances less than 10 years old, mattresses in good condition (subject to program-specific rules), kitchenware, lamps, and most household goods.

Items typically not accepted: damaged or stained furniture, mattresses with bedbug history or significant wear, appliances that don’t work, particle-board furniture in poor condition, cribs (federal safety regulations have changed), and exercise equipment that requires reassembly. Always call before scheduling if you’re unsure, pickups that find unacceptable items will leave them behind.

How Las Vegas handles refrigerators

Las Vegas runs one of the most generous bulk pickup systems of any major U.S. city: biweekly bulk pickup is BUNDLED INTO Republic Services' base residential service rate, no scheduling required, no extra fee. Just place items at the curb by 5 AM on the same day as your regular trash and recycling, every other week. The catch: mattresses must be wrapped in plastic before disposal, fabric-covered furniture must also be wrapped, and only one major appliance per service day is allowed. Republic Services of Southern Nevada operates under a franchise agreement with the City of Las Vegas, also serving Henderson, North Las Vegas, and Summerlin. Two HHW/electronics drop-off locations rotate Wed-Sat between Henderson and North Las Vegas. This page walks through every legitimate option in order from free to paid.

The Las Vegas rule for refrigerators: Republic's Southern Nevada bulk guidance says no refrigerators or anything containing Freon. Call 702-735-5151 to schedule a separate appliance pickup (a fee may apply), or take it to a transfer station for a fee. Remove the door either way.

Program basics: Items no longer than 6 feet, in manageable pieces, generally one major appliance per bulk day. Larger loads or same-day requests are billed as special pickups. At the curb by 6 a.m. on your bulk week collection day, separate from carts, not on private property. Items left out on a non-bulk week are a code issue.

What the city will not take: Refrigerators and anything containing Freon (separate paid appliance pickup), tires, electronics, hazardous waste, construction debris, and items over 6 feet.

How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: Republic Services (City of Las Vegas franchise hauler): residential bulk item collection, City of Las Vegas: Trash and Recycling. Programs change; confirm fees and limits before you go.

Hazardous and regulated components in Las Vegas. Las Vegas residents can dispose of household hazardous waste at Republic Services' two rotating transfer stations: Henderson Transfer Station (560 Cape Horn Drive) and Cheyenne Transfer Station (315 W. Cheyenne Avenue, North Las Vegas). The two locations operate on a rotating Wed-Sat schedule, always call 702-735-5151 or check republicservices.com/southern-nevada to confirm which is open. HHW limits: 15 gallons or 40 pounds per customer, gasoline 5 gallons max. Several retailers also offer ongoing free recycling: Home Depot for batteries and CFL bulbs, AutoZone for motor oil and car batteries, Best Buy for electronics, Walgreens for unused medications. The Southern Nevada Health District’s Clark County Recycles directory is the best single resource for finding where each specific item can go.

Why refrigerators are different from ordinary bulk. The challenge with refrigerators is regulatory complexity, not bulk volume. Federal law (Clean Air Act Section 608) requires certified technicians to recover refrigerants, this CANNOT be done at the curb by a regular pickup crew.

Prep checklist before pickup day in Las Vegas

Three mistakes that get refrigerators left at the curb:

  • Don’t put a refrigerator at the curb without checking the rules. Most cities require either certified drainage tag, doors removed, or both. Crews will leave non-compliant units, and code enforcement notices may follow.
  • Don’t try to drain the refrigerant yourself. Federal law (Clean Air Act Section 608) makes it ILLEGAL for non-certified individuals to release or attempt to release refrigerant. Penalties include $25,000+ per violation.
  • Don’t leave doors attached. Federal child entrapment safety rule from 1956 requires doors removed or secured open before disposal. Even if your city doesn’t enforce this, removing doors is a 5-minute task that prevents a child fatality risk.

Common questions about refrigerator removal in Las Vegas

Does Las Vegas pick up refrigerators for free?

Not with regular bulk. Schedule a separate Freon appliance pickup through Republic at 702-735-5151, which may carry a fee.

Where can I donate a refrigerator in Las Vegas?

Las Vegas’s donation programs accept items in good usable condition: clean upholstered furniture without significant tears or stains, working appliances less than 10 years old, mattresses in good condition (subject to program-specific rules), kitchenware, lamps, and most household goods.

How much does paid refrigerator removal cost in Las Vegas?

Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single refrigerator pickup in Las Vegas starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who need same-day service, exceed the one-major-appliance-per-day limit, have construction debris, can’t wait two weeks for bulk pickup, or need full-service in-home removal, LoadUp offers professional removal in Las Vegas with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.

Can I just put a refrigerator at the curb?

In most cities, no. Refrigerators contain refrigerant that must be drained by a certified technician before disposal under federal Clean Air Act regulations. Most cities require either: (1) Pre-pickup drainage with a tag certifying it, OR (2) self-haul to a city Solid Waste Facility where staff handle drainage. Some cities exclude refrigerators from regular bulk entirely. Check your city’s rules in the section above.

What’s the cheapest way to get rid of a refrigerator?

In order from cheapest: (1) FREE if you’re replacing, retailer haul-away with new appliance delivery. (2) FREE PLUS REBATE if your unit is energy-inefficient and working, utility company appliance recycling rebate ($30 to $75 paid TO YOU). (3) FREE if you can self-haul, some cities (Knoxville, Albuquerque, Tucson) operate Solid Waste Facilities with on-site certified drainage. (4) ~$25 to $75 if you can’t self-haul, certified technician drainage + free city pickup. (5) $80+ for full-service paid hauling like LoadUp. Most households end up using option 1 (retailer haul-away) because they’re replacing the appliance anyway.

Why does federal law require certified refrigerant drainage?

Refrigerants are extraordinarily potent greenhouse gases. HCFC-22 (older Freon) has roughly 1,810 times the global warming potential of CO2 over 100 years. R-134a (modern automotive AC refrigerant) has 1,430. R-410A (modern home AC refrigerant) has 2,088. A typical home refrigerator contains about 4 to 8 ounces of refrigerant; releasing it during disposal is the equivalent of driving a car several thousand miles. The Clean Air Act Section 608 requires EPA-certified technicians for recovery to ensure the refrigerant is captured and reused or properly destroyed rather than vented to atmosphere.

Are washing machines and dryers handled the same way?

No, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and water heaters do NOT contain refrigerants and don’t require certified drainage. They’re typically eligible for regular city bulk pickup without special handling. The exception: gas dryers, which need their gas line professionally disconnected first (typically a plumber or appliance installer, often part of new appliance delivery).
