A public resource guide
Aluminum and steel frames are scrap, resin wicker and plastic chairs are bulk, cushions are trash, and umbrellas and glass tables need special handling. Most of it leaves free.
Last updated: October 2026 · Maintained by Freemoval as a public resource
Patio furniture is seasonal clutter with a clear disposal logic once you sort it by material. Aluminum frames are among the most valuable scrap a household produces; wrought iron and steel are heavy scrap that scrappers collect free. Resin wicker, molded plastic chairs, and composite pieces have no scrap value and go to bulk pickup or, for intact pieces, to donation. Glass tabletops break and need to be handled as glass. Cushions and umbrella canopies are trash. The one piece that trips people up is the market umbrella: a long pole that exceeds many bulk programs' length limits until the pole is unscrewed in half.

Patio sets accumulate damage that donation programs will not accept: rust on steel, fading and brittleness on plastic, unraveling resin wicker, and mildew on cushions. Intact aluminum and teak sets in good condition donate easily; everything else goes to scrap or bulk.
Glass tabletops are tempered and shatter into pebbles if a corner is struck. Bulk crews refuse unprotected glass. Tape the surface in a grid, box it, or lean it against the table with glass marked. Many programs ask for the glass to be removed from the frame.
Volume is the other factor. A full set is a table, four to six chairs, cushions, an umbrella, and a base. That can be eight or more items against a bulk program limit, which is why sorting metal out to a scrapper first is practical: it removes the heaviest pieces for free.
Sort the set by material and most of it leaves free the same week.
Scrap pickup for aluminum, steel, and wrought iron
Free, often paid to youAluminum patio frames are lightweight and high-value scrap; cast aluminum and wrought iron sets are heavy and also wanted. Post the metal pieces as free scrap and a scrapper collects them within a day, or take aluminum to a yard yourself where it pays several times the per-pound rate of steel.
A magnet test separates aluminum (no stick) from steel (sticks). Yards pay far more for aluminum sorted out.
Remove cushions and glass before the scrapper arrives; they only want the frame.
Donation and free listings for intact sets
FreeHabitat ReStores and thrift stores accept patio sets in good condition in spring and summer. Free listings on Marketplace and Buy Nothing groups move plastic chairs, resin wicker with minor wear, and umbrellas with working mechanisms fast, especially April through June.
Hose everything down and let it dry before photos; grime is the main reason patio pieces get refused.
Teak and cast aluminum have resale value even weathered; list them for sale rather than free.
City bulk pickup
Free in most citiesChairs, tables, loungers, and umbrellas are accepted by nearly every bulk program as furniture. Glass must be removed and protected. Umbrella poles usually need to be broken down to meet length limits. Cushions go in the trash cart or bulk as bagged items.
Stack and tie chairs so a set of four counts as one or two items where programs allow bundles.
Umbrella bases filled with sand or concrete are heavy; empty sand ones before set-out.
Paid options are for a full set with nowhere to stage it, a condo with no bulk service, or heavy cast pieces nobody will carry.
Self-haul to a transfer station
$10 to $30Plastic and resin pieces stack into a pickup or trailer. Transfer stations charge by load. Take the metal to a scrap yard separately where it is free or pays.
Break resin wicker frames down to reduce the volume charge.
LoadUp paid pickup
$80+For households not eligible for free programs, or who need patio furniture gone this week, LoadUp connects you with independent loaders in cities across all 50 states. Upfront pricing, same-week scheduling, in-home pickup from any floor, and licensed disposal or recycling handled for you.
What’s included: Loading, hauling, and disposal. No prep needed beyond pointing out what goes.
Pricing: Starts around $80 for a single item; full-truck pickups range from $300 to $600 depending on volume.
If you can pay for a pickup, your booking helps fund free pickups for someone else. Every paid LoadUp customer can opt in to round up at checkout, and 100% of round-ups go directly to Freemoval’s subsidized jobs.
Get a patio furniture pickup price from LoadUp → Round-up option appears at checkout. Optional, opt-in only.
Patio furniture is accepted as standard bulk furniture in nearly every city; the variables are glass handling, umbrella length limits, and item counts. Tap a city for its rule. Each city link opens a dedicated free patio furniture removal guide for that city, built from the same researched city data.

Can patio furniture go out with bulk trash?
Yes in nearly every city with a bulk program. Remove glass tabletops and protect them, break down umbrellas, and stack chairs. Metal pieces can go to scrap instead.
Is aluminum patio furniture worth anything as scrap?
Yes. Aluminum pays several times the per-pound rate of steel, and a full aluminum set weighs 60 to 120 pounds. Many people get $20 to $60 at a yard, or simply give it to a scrapper who picks it up free.
What do I do with a glass patio tabletop?
Remove it from the frame. For bulk pickup, tape the surface in a grid, mark it 'glass,' and lean it securely, or box it. Intact tempered glass tops are also easy to give away because replacements cost $100 or more.
Can I donate weathered patio furniture?
Donation programs want pieces without rust, brittleness, or mildew. Weathered teak and cast aluminum are accepted and resold; faded plastic and frayed resin wicker usually are not. Free listings are more forgiving.
How do I dispose of patio cushions?
Cushions go in the trash cart if they fit, or out with bulk as bagged items. Textile recyclers rarely accept outdoor foam. Covers in good condition can be donated separately.
What about a propane fire pit or patio heater?
Remove the propane tank first; it goes to a propane exchange or HHW, never the trash. The steel body is scrap and most bulk programs accept it. See the grill guide for propane tank handling.
What does LoadUp charge to remove patio furniture?
A single piece prices at the single-item minimum, around $80 to $100 in most metros; a full set prices by volume. Independent loaders on the LoadUp marketplace separate metal for recycling and donate intact pieces when possible.
