How Kansas City handles hot tubs

Kansas City, Missouri runs an unusually generous appointment-based system: FREE Bulky Item Pickup by appointment for single-family homes and apartments with 6 units or fewer, with a remarkably high limit of 15 items per appointment (no item over 500 lbs). Trash and recycling are funded through property taxes, no separate monthly bill. The catch is the strict cart rules: trash MUST be in the official City-issued cart, ALL trash inside the cart must be BAGGED (no loose trash), the lid must fully close, and the cart can’t exceed 250 lbs total. Glass is NOT accepted in curbside recycling, must be taken to drop-off locations. Refrigerators and freezers (CFC/Freon items) require a separate truck, must indicate when scheduling. Note: Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS are SEPARATE cities with separate programs, this page covers KCMO only. This page walks through every legitimate option in order from free to paid.

The Kansas City rule for hot tubs: Not on the list; a drained, broken-down tub may count as items. Confirm with 311. Most people hire a crew.

Program basics: 15 items per appointment. Appliances must be emptied and cleaned. At your regular collection point on the appointment date, at least 4 feet from trash and recycling carts, nothing mixed with bagged trash.

What the city will not take: Waste tires, paint and household hazardous waste, yard waste, auto parts, loose building materials and masonry, damaged carts and bins, and anything from a business.

How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: KCMO 311: Bulky Item Pick-Up Service. Programs change; confirm fees and limits before you go.

Hazardous and regulated components in Kansas City. Kansas City residents have free year-round HHW disposal at the Regional Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 4707 Deramus, Kansas City, MO 64120 (just south of the Chouteau Bridge). Hours: Thursdays and Fridays 9 AM-6 PM, Saturdays 9 AM-4 PM. Free for residents. Drop off paint, automotive fluids, lawn and garden products, household cleaners, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent bulbs. HHW is NEVER accepted in any of the three regular recycling drop-off centers or curbside trash. Several retailers also offer ongoing free recycling: Home Depot for batteries and CFL bulbs, AutoZone for motor oil and car batteries, Best Buy for electronics, most pharmacies for unused medications. The City periodically sponsors special collection events for items like confidential paper shredding, call 311 for upcoming events.

Why hot tubs are different from ordinary bulk. Hot tubs combine multiple disposal challenges in one item: weight (a typical 6-person hot tub weighs 300 to 500 lbs empty, 3,000+ lbs filled), size (typically 7 to 8 ft square or larger), specialized utilities (220V electrical, dedicated plumbing connections), and assembly complexity (rigid acrylic shell, foam insulation, frame, decorative skirt, jets, pumps, heaters).

Prep checklist before pickup day in Kansas City

Three mistakes that get hot tubs left at the curb:

  • Don’t leave a hot tub at the curb without confirming city rules. Most cities exclude hot tubs from bulk pickup, an unscheduled hot tub will sit there indefinitely.
  • Don’t skip electrical disconnect. Hot tubs run on 220V dedicated circuits, disconnect must be performed at the breaker panel by a licensed electrician in most municipalities. Cutting power to “the spa” alone isn’t sufficient.
  • Don’t drain the hot tub directly into a sewer line if it has chlorine. Many municipalities prohibit chlorinated water in storm drains and sewer lines without dechlorination. Either let chlorine dissipate naturally for 1 to 2 weeks, or use a dechlorinating agent before draining.

Common questions about hot tub removal in Kansas City

Does Kansas City pick up hot tubs for free?

Confirm with 311. Most people hire a crew.

How much does paid hot tub removal cost in Kansas City?

Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single hot tub pickup in Kansas City starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who need same-day or in-home pickup, exceed the 15-item or 500-lb limit, can’t wait for the next appointment, live in 7+ unit buildings without KCMO service, or want full-service hauling, LoadUp offers professional removal in Kansas City with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.

How much does professional hot tub removal cost?

Typical pricing ranges $300 to $800 for above-ground hot tubs, $500 to $1,200+ for in-ground or hard-to-access installations. The cost reflects 3 to 6 hours of labor with multiple crew members, specialized equipment for disassembly, electrical and plumbing disconnects, and disposal fees. Always get 2 to 3 quotes, prices vary significantly by region and accessibility.

Can I sell a non-working hot tub?

Sometimes. Non-working hot tubs occasionally find buyers who want them for: (1) Repair and resale, some buyers fix and flip. (2) Parts, the pumps, heaters, and jets have resale value separate from the shell. (3) Scrap metal, the frame contains 50 to 150 lbs of steel. List on Craigslist Free section or Facebook Marketplace at $0 with details about what works and what doesn’t. The key benefit even at $0: the buyer handles removal, saving you $300 to $800 in paid hauler fees.

Can I just drain it and leave it for trash collection?

Generally no. Most U.S. cities explicitly exclude hot tubs from regular bulk pickup because of weight (300+ lbs even drained) and size. A hot tub left at the curb without confirmed pickup will sit there, accumulate code enforcement notices, and may result in fines that exceed the cost of paid removal. Always check your city’s rules before any DIY approach, the city section above has summaries.

Do I need a permit to remove a hot tub?

For above-ground hot tubs, no permit is typically required for removal, just for installation. For in-ground hot tubs, removal may require a permit because of the excavation and electrical work involved. Some HOAs also require notification or approval for hot tub removal, especially if visible from common areas. Check with your municipality and HOA before starting work, and confirm with your removal service that they’ll handle any required permits as part of their pricing.
