Limits: No published volume limit. Items must be listed on the request. Multifamily communities with more than 5 appliances need extra planning through the city's multifamily administrator.

Set-out: At the curb by 6 a.m. on your scheduled day and no sooner than the day before, with 3 feet between items. Appliances must be empty with the door removed and an X of tape across the opening.

How Charlotte handles lawn mowers

Charlotte’s bulk pickup runs on appointment-based scheduling through the CLT+ portal or 311. Combined with four free full-service Mecklenburg County drop-off centers and weekly garbage and yard waste, Charlotte has solid free disposal options. This page walks through every one in order from free to paid, including the strict 75-pound item weight limit and the unique 2-week recycling cycle.

The Charlotte rule for lawn mowers: Lawn equipment is named in the city's bulky definition. Drain gas and oil first; those go to a county center.

Program basics: No published volume limit. Items must be listed on the request. Multifamily communities with more than 5 appliances need extra planning through the city's multifamily administrator. At the curb by 6 a.m. on your scheduled day and no sooner than the day before, with 3 feet between items. Appliances must be empty with the door removed and an X of tape across the opening.

What the city will not take: Household hazardous waste (batteries, bulbs, paint, propane) and tires still on rims. Mecklenburg County's four full-service recycling centers handle those.

How we checked this. The rules on this page were verified in October 2026 against: City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services: Collection Guidelines (bulky waste), City of Charlotte: Multi-family Services (bulky collection for apartments). Programs change; confirm fees and limits before you go.

Hazardous and regulated components in Charlotte. Charlotte residents can take household hazardous waste, electronics, and other hard-to-recycle items to any of the four Mecklenburg County full-service drop-off centers free with proof of residency. Several retailers also offer ongoing free recycling: Home Depot for batteries and CFL bulbs, AutoZone for motor oil and car batteries, Best Buy for electronics, and most pharmacies for unused medications.

Why lawn mowers are different from ordinary bulk. Fuel and oil are hazardous household waste. A mower set out with gas in the tank will be skipped by most bulk crews and refused by scrap yards, and residual oil leaks onto the truck bed. Draining both takes ten minutes but is the step everyone skips.

Prep checklist before pickup day in Charlotte

  • Disconnect the spark plug wire (gas) or remove the battery pack (cordless).
  • Run the tank dry or siphon fuel into an approved can for HHW or an auto parts store.
  • Tip the mower spark plug side up and drain the oil into a pan; take it to an auto parts store.
  • On riders, remove the 12V battery and take it to an auto parts store for free recycling.
  • Fold the handle, leave the gas cap off so crews can see the tank is empty, and set out on the scheduled day.

Three mistakes that get lawn mowers left at the curb:

  • Don't put a mower out with fuel in the tank. It is the number one reason mowers get skipped at the curb and refused at yards.
  • Don't pour old gas or oil down a drain or on the ground. Both go to an HHW facility or an auto parts store.
  • Don't throw a lithium mower battery in the trash. It belongs in a battery recycling bin or at HHW; trash truck fires are increasingly caused by these packs.

Paid pickup is mostly for riding mowers that will not fit a bulk program and have no scrapper nearby.

Self-haul to a scrap yard or transfer station

Free to $20

A push mower fits in any trunk with the handle folded. A rider needs a trailer or ramps into a pickup. Scrap yards take both free; transfer stations charge a small bulky fee.

Drain fluids before loading so nothing spills in the vehicle.

Common questions about lawn mower removal in Charlotte

Does Charlotte pick up lawn mowers for free?

Yes, drained, with a scheduled pickup. Fuel and oil go to a county center.

How much does paid lawn mower removal cost in Charlotte?

Through the LoadUp marketplace, a single lawn mower pickup in Charlotte starts around $80 to $100 with upfront pricing, and full-truck loads run $300 to $600 depending on volume. For households who need same-week service, have items the city won’t accept (over 75 lbs, certain construction debris), or live in unincorporated Mecklenburg County, LoadUp offers professional removal in Charlotte with upfront pricing. Independent loaders in the marketplace handle pickup, loading, and licensed disposal.

Can I put a lawn mower out with bulk trash?

Push mowers, yes, in most cities, provided the gas and oil are drained. Riding mowers usually exceed bulk weight limits and go to a scrap yard or paid pickup. Check your city’s rule in the directory below.

How do I drain the gas and oil?

Run the mower until it stalls or siphon the tank into an approved gas can. Then tip the mower with the spark plug side up and drain the oil through the fill tube into a pan, or remove the drain plug underneath. Take both to an auto parts store or HHW facility.

Will a scrap yard pay for a lawn mower?

A few dollars for a push mower, more for a rider. The aluminum engine block has the most value. Many people find the free pickup more useful than the payout.

What do I do with the battery from a riding mower?

It is a 12V lead-acid battery accepted free at any auto parts store, often with a core credit, and at HHW facilities. Never put it in the trash.

Is this Charlotte page maintained?
