A public resource guide
Couches are one of the most disposable household items, and one of the most commonly dumped illegally. Here’s every legitimate option, including which donation programs pick up free.
Last updated: May 2026 · Maintained by Freemoval as a public resource
Couches and sofas are one of the most disposed household items in America, and unfortunately one of the most commonly dumped illegally. The good news: most U.S. cities offer free curbside bulk pickup for couches (often the simplest disposal of any large household item), and donation programs like Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore, and Furniture Banks pick up couches in usable condition for free. The catch: donation programs are picky about condition (no significant tears, stains, or odors), and some cities have weight or size limits. This guide covers every legitimate path including donation pickup, free city bulk pickup, retailer haul-away, and detailed city-by-city rules across 117 U.S. cities.
On this page
Couches are awkward but not regulated like refrigerators or mattresses. The main challenges are: size and weight (sectional couches often exceed cities’ bulk pickup item limits or weight caps), condition (donation programs reject couches with stains, tears, broken frames, or odors), bedbugs (some cities require plastic-wrapping for upholstered furniture, NYC, Cleveland), and frame disassembly (some cities require sectional couches be broken into pieces under specific dimensions for pickup).
The single most useful question to ask: “Is this couch usable?” If yes, donation pickup is almost always available free in 50+ U.S. metros, and a usable couch supplied to a Furniture Bank goes to a family transitioning out of homelessness. If no, free city bulk pickup is the typical path.
In order from most universal to most location-specific:
Donation Pickup (Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore, Goodwill, Furniture Banks)
Free, if usableCouches in good usable condition (no significant tears, stains, sagging, or odors) qualify for free pickup by donation programs. The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, and local Furniture Banks all operate free pickup in 50+ U.S. metros.
Furniture Banks specifically supply couches to families transitioning out of homelessness, high impact, well-loved channel. Find your local at furniturebanks.org.
Tax receipt: Donations to qualified 501(c)(3) organizations are tax-deductible at fair market value, typically $50–$300 for a usable couch. Get a receipt at pickup.
City Curbside Bulk Pickup
Free in most citiesMost major U.S. cities offer couches as part of free bulky waste pickup, weekly, monthly, by appointment, or twice-yearly. Couches are one of the most universally accepted bulk items. Rules vary on appointment requirements, item count limits, and weight caps.
Check the city section below for your local rules. Most cities accept couches in any condition (stained, torn, broken frames) as long as the frame is intact enough to lift.
Online Marketplaces (Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Buy Nothing)
Free, often quickCouches in usable condition typically find takers within 24–48 hours on Craigslist (Free section), Facebook Marketplace (price $0), OfferUp, or hyperlocal Buy Nothing groups. Buyer typically picks up.
Hidden gem: Items in marginal condition that donation programs would reject often find takers here. Buy Nothing groups especially are a community-resource hidden gem.
Retailer Haul-Away with New Furniture Delivery
Sometimes freeSome major furniture retailers (West Elm, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware) include free old-couch haul-away with new couch delivery. Cheaper retailers (IKEA, Wayfair, Ashley) often charge $50–$150 for haul-away.
Especially valuable for sectionals that exceed city bulk pickup size limits. Confirm at purchase.
When free options don’t fit your timeline or your couch is too damaged for donation:
LoadUp paid pickup
$70+For households who need same-day or in-home pickup, exceed city bulk limits, have a sectional couch that exceeds donation programs’ acceptance criteria, or want full-service hauling, LoadUp offers professional couch removal nationwide with upfront pricing. Loaders in the marketplace handle disassembly, lifting, and pickup. Licensed disposal.
If you can pay for a pickup, your booking helps fund free pickups for someone else. Every paid LoadUp customer can opt in to round up at checkout, and 100% of round-ups go directly to Freemoval’s subsidized jobs.
Book a couch pickup with LoadUp → Round-up option appears at checkout. Optional, opt-in only.
Other Paid Junk Removal Services
$70–$200National services include 1-800-Got-Junk and College Hunks Hauling Junk. Local independent haulers in most metros offer competitive pricing, typically $50–$100 if you find a smaller operator. Bundling 2–3 furniture items into one pickup is often only marginally more expensive than booking 1, ask about bundled pricing.
Couch disposal rules vary based on whether your city offers free weekly bulk pickup, requires appointments, has weight or size limits, or requires plastic-wrapping for bedbug prevention. The summaries below show the headline rule per city, tap any city to read the full guide.

My couch is in good condition. What’s the best disposal option?
Donation pickup. Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Goodwill, and local Furniture Banks all offer free pickup of usable couches in 50+ U.S. metros. Schedule at satruck.org (Salvation Army) or call 1-800-SA-TRUCK. Habitat ReStore: habitat.org/restores. Furniture Bank Network locator: furniturebanks.org. Pickup is typically scheduled 1–2 weeks out. The donation also gets you a tax receipt for the fair market value of the couch.
My couch has stains and tears. Will anyone take it?
Donation programs typically reject couches with significant stains, tears, broken frames, or odors. Your remaining options: (1) Free city bulk pickup, most cities accept couches in any condition as long as the frame is intact. (2) Online “Free” listings on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or Buy Nothing groups, some takers will rehab couches that donation programs reject (recovering, repair, etc.). (3) Paid hauler ($70+) for full-service same-day pickup. Don’t leave a stained couch at the curb expecting donation programs to take it, it will sit there.
My sectional couch is huge. Will city bulk pickup accept it?
Depends on your city. Most cities accept sectional couches but require they be broken into pieces under specific dimensions (typically each piece under 6–8 ft long, sometimes weight limits apply). San Francisco caps individual pieces at 100 lbs; Columbia SC caps at 40 lbs (which most sectionals exceed). For large sectionals exceeding city limits: (1) Donation pickup if usable, Habitat ReStore especially handles large items. (2) Retailer haul-away with new couch delivery. (3) Paid hauler ($100–$200 typical for sectionals) with crew and equipment to handle the size.
Can I take a couch to the dump myself?
Yes, most cities operate landfills or transfer stations that accept self-hauled bulk items for a tipping fee ($10–$50 typical). This is often cheaper than paid haulers if you have a truck. Search “[your city] landfill tipping fee” or “[your city] transfer station.” Bring proof of city residency (utility bill or driver’s license). Some cities charge non-residents 2–3x the resident rate.
What about leather couches, same rules?
Yes, leather couches follow the same rules as fabric couches in nearly every city. Donation programs especially love leather couches because they’re durable and have higher resale value. The exception: high-end leather couches (Italian leather, designer brands) under 10 years old often have meaningful resale value, consignment furniture stores or online marketplaces (Chairish, AptDeco) may offer $500–$2,000+ before considering disposal.
