How to get rid of old furniture.

Dressers, tables, chairs, bookshelves, desks, bed frames, entertainment centers, if it’s usable, donation programs pick up free. If it’s not, most cities offer free bulk pickup. Here’s every legitimate option.

“How do I get rid of old furniture?” is one of the most-searched disposal questions in America, and the answer is usually simpler than people expect. Usable furniture is highly valued by donation programs (Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore, Goodwill, Furniture Banks all pick up free), and most U.S. cities offer free bulk pickup for furniture regardless of condition. The two key questions are: (1) Is this furniture usable? (2) How fast do I need it gone? This guide covers donation pickup, free city bulk pickup, retailer haul-away, online marketplaces, paid haulers, and detailed city-by-city rules across 108 U.S. cities. For specific large items, we also have dedicated guides for couches and mattresses, both follow similar patterns but have item-specific quirks.

The challenge with furniture

Furniture disposal isn’t heavily regulated like refrigerators or hazardous waste, the challenges are practical: (1) Size and weight (sectionals, dining tables, large dressers, entertainment centers can exceed city bulk pickup limits). (2) Condition (donation programs reject furniture with significant damage, stains, or pest history). (3) Disassembly (some cities require large pieces broken into manageable sections). (4) Pickup logistics (most donation programs require ground-floor or accessible placement; few will navigate stairs).

The single most useful question to ask: “Is this furniture usable?” If yes, donation pickup is almost always available free in 50+ U.S. metros. If no, free city bulk pickup is the typical path. Both routes work for most furniture types, the differences come down to condition and whether you’re replacing the furniture with something new (in which case retailer haul-away may sidestep both options entirely).

Free options

In order from most universal to most location-specific:

Donation Pickup (Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore, Goodwill, Furniture Banks)

Free, if usable

Furniture in good usable condition (no significant tears, stains, broken frames, or odors) qualifies for free pickup by donation programs. The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Goodwill (in regions where Goodwill offers pickup), St. Vincent de Paul, and local Furniture Banks all operate free pickup in 50+ U.S. metros. Most accept dressers, tables, chairs, bookshelves, desks, bed frames, nightstands, entertainment centers, and dining sets.

Habitat ReStore especially handles larger items (sectionals, dining sets, bedroom sets) that smaller donation programs sometimes reject. habitat.org/restores

Furniture Banks specifically supply furniture to families transitioning out of homelessness, high-impact channel if your furniture is in good shape. furniturebanks.org

Tax receipt: Donations to qualified 501(c)(3) organizations are tax-deductible at fair market value. A used dresser is typically $25–$100, a dining table $100–$300, a bedroom set $200–$500. Get a receipt at pickup.

City Curbside Bulk Pickup

Free in most cities

Most major U.S. cities offer furniture as part of free bulky waste pickup, weekly, monthly, by appointment, or twice-yearly. Furniture is one of the most universally accepted bulk items. Rules vary on appointment requirements, item count limits, and weight caps.

Accepts furniture in any condition in most cities, stained, torn, broken frames are fine as long as the piece is intact enough to lift. This is the path for furniture donation programs reject.

Disassembly: Some cities require large pieces broken into pieces under specific dimensions (typically 6–8 ft long max). Check the city section below.

Online Marketplaces (Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Buy Nothing)

Free, often quick

Furniture in usable condition typically finds takers within 24–48 hours on Craigslist (Free section), Facebook Marketplace (price $0), OfferUp, or hyperlocal Buy Nothing groups. Buyer typically picks up.

For high-end or designer furniture: Resale value often justifies a non-zero price. A Crate & Barrel sectional that originally retailed for $2,500 might sell used for $400–$800 within a week. Designer brands hold value especially well.

Buy Nothing groups especially are a community-resource hidden gem, they find takers for furniture in marginal condition that donation programs would reject.

Retailer Haul-Away with New Furniture Delivery

Sometimes free

Some major furniture retailers (West Elm, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Room & Board) include free old-furniture haul-away with new furniture delivery. Cheaper retailers (IKEA, Wayfair, Ashley, Bob’s Discount Furniture) often charge $50–$150 for haul-away.

Especially valuable for large pieces (sectionals, dining sets, bedroom sets) that exceed city bulk pickup size limits. Confirm at purchase.

Consignment Stores & Online Resale (High-End Furniture)

Free pickup, you earn

High-end and designer furniture (Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, Room & Board, designer brands) often has meaningful resale value through consignment stores or online marketplaces. Chairish, AptDeco, 1stDibs, and Kaiyo specialize in furniture resale, pieces can sell for 20–50% of original retail. Most consignment stores offer free pickup for inventory worth $300+.

Worth checking first: Even a basic IKEA Hemnes dresser sells for $50–$100 on Facebook Marketplace. Designer pieces often justify the time investment of a proper resale listing.

When free options don’t fit your timeline or your furniture is too damaged for donation:

LoadUp paid pickup

$70+

For households who need same-day or in-home pickup, exceed city bulk limits, are clearing out an entire room or property, or want full-service hauling without managing donation scheduling, LoadUp offers professional furniture removal nationwide with upfront pricing. Loaders in the marketplace handle disassembly, lifting, and pickup. Licensed disposal at certified facilities, donation routing for usable items where possible.

If you can pay for a pickup, your booking helps fund free pickups for someone else. Every paid LoadUp customer can opt in to round up at checkout, and 100% of round-ups go directly to Freemoval’s subsidized jobs.

Book a furniture pickup with LoadUp → Round-up option appears at checkout. Optional, opt-in only.

Other Paid Junk Removal Services

$70–$300+

National services include 1-800-Got-Junk and College Hunks Hauling Junk. Local independent haulers in most metros offer competitive pricing, typically $50–$150 if you find a smaller operator. Bundling multiple furniture items into one pickup is often only marginally more expensive than booking 1, ask about bundled pricing for whole-room cleanouts.

Whole-room or whole-house cleanouts: Pricing scales with volume. A typical 1-bedroom cleanout: $200–$500. A typical estate cleanout: $500–$2,000+. Always get 2–3 quotes.

Self-Haul to Landfill or Transfer Station

$10–$50 tipping fee

Most cities operate landfills or transfer stations that accept self-hauled furniture for a tipping fee ($10–$50 typical). Often the cheapest option if you have a truck and want fast disposal. Search “[your city] landfill tipping fee” or “[your city] transfer station.”

Bring proof of city residency (utility bill or driver’s license). Some cities charge non-residents 2–3x the resident rate.

Find furniture disposal rules in your city

Furniture disposal rules vary by city, some offer free weekly bulk pickup with no appointment, others require appointments, and some have weight or size limits. The summaries below show the headline rule per city, tap any city to read the full guide.

Common mistakes to avoid

Common questions

What’s the easiest way to get rid of old furniture?

If the furniture is usable, donation pickup is the easiest path. Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Goodwill, and local Furniture Banks offer free pickup of usable furniture in 50+ U.S. metros. Schedule online or by phone, typically 1–2 weeks out. If the furniture is broken or unusable, free city bulk pickup is the next easiest option in most cities.

Will Salvation Army or Goodwill pick up furniture for free?

Yes, both programs offer free pickup in most major U.S. metros. Salvation Army: schedule at satruck.org or call 1-800-SA-TRUCK. Goodwill pickup availability varies by region, many local Goodwills offer pickup, others only accept drop-offs. Habitat for Humanity ReStore (habitat.org/restores) is another excellent option specifically for larger furniture. All three require furniture to be in usable condition: no significant tears, stains, broken frames, or odors.

What if my furniture is broken or really damaged?

Donation programs typically reject broken or heavily damaged furniture. Your remaining options: (1) Free city bulk pickup, most cities accept furniture in any condition as long as the frame is intact enough to lift. (2) Online “Free” listings on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or Buy Nothing groups, some takers will rehab furniture donations reject. (3) Paid hauler ($70+) for full-service same-day pickup. The Buy Nothing groups especially find takers for furniture donation programs reject.

Do furniture stores offer free haul-away with delivery?

It varies. High-end retailers (West Elm, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Room & Board) typically include free old-furniture haul-away with new furniture delivery. Mid-tier and budget retailers (IKEA, Wayfair, Ashley, Bob’s Discount Furniture) often charge $50–$150 for haul-away, or offer it as an add-on. Always confirm at purchase. This is especially valuable for large pieces (sectionals, dining sets) that exceed city bulk pickup size limits.

What about high-end or designer furniture?

High-end and designer furniture (Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, Room & Board, designer brands) often has meaningful resale value through consignment furniture stores or online marketplaces like Chairish, AptDeco, 1stDibs, and Kaiyo. Pieces can sell for 20–50% of original retail. Consignment stores typically pickup free for inventory worth $300+. Worth checking before considering disposal, even a basic IKEA Hemnes dresser sells for $50–$100 on Facebook Marketplace.
